An exhibition of works by Tamara Lempicka will take place in October at the de Young Museum, which is part of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. This is the first such major exhibition of the artist’s work in this country. The official opening will take place on 12 October.
Fans of Tamara Lempicka’s work are spread all over the world. Her paintings are also popular in the United States, where they reach sums of several tens of millions of dollars at auction. In 2020, we wrote about the record-breaking sum of 21.1 million dollars paid by a buyer for “Portrait of Marjorie Ferry” from 1932. Soon, Americans will be able to see such a cross-sectional exhibition of the Polish artist for the first time in history.
Tamara Łempicka’s work is a unique example of the use of the art deco style in painting. The artist uniquely displayed the glamour of the ‘mad’ 1920s.
The exhibition will feature works from different periods of the artist’s career. The paintings will be arranged chronologically, from those created in her youth to her mature period. The exhibition will be divided into four stages: “Tamara Rozalia Hurwitz”, “Monsieur Lempitzky”, “Tamara de Lempicka” and “Baroness Kuffner”. This will allow visitors to follow the evolution of her work from her childhood in Poland to her move to St Petersburg. Although Lempicka married a baron, she consistently signed her works with her first husband’s name.
The works on display will be brought from museums and private collections, including the Centre Pompidou. A total of 120 works will be presented. Among them will be not only avant-garde portraits that combine classical and modern sensibilities, but also lesser-known drawings. The portraits in the exhibition offer a glimpse into the life of the artist, who immortalised well-known figures in her paintings, including her daughters and husbands.
The exhibition will also be on view at 2025 Museum of Fine Arts Houston from 9 March to 26 May.
