Temppeliaukio Church in Helsinki. The underground temple was carved into the rock

The Rock Church, also known as Temppeliaukio Church (Finnish: Temppeliaukion kirkko), is one of Finland’s most important and most visited architectural attractions. Located in the Töölö district of Helsinki, at 3 Lutherinkatu Street, it is an unusual combination of modern architecture and rugged natural landscape.

The history of Temppeliaukio Church dates back to the 1960s, when brothers Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen won a competition to design this unique site. The competition, which took place in 1960-61, was the third attempt to create a concept for a modern temple at the site, following earlier unrealised competitions in the 1930s.

From the very beginning, the Suomalainen brothers’ project stood out for its unique approach to the surrounding environment. Instead of a traditional building, they decided to use natural granite rocks as an integral part of the structure. As the architects themselves mentioned, their architectural concepts were inspired by the landscape of the island of Suursaari, where they spent their childhood.

Although the Suomalainen brothers’ project received a positive reception in the press, its implementation faced many difficulties. In the 1960s, Finland was a country where anti-church attitudes and left-wing radicalism prevailed. For years, the construction of the church was discredited in the media, and its cost – comparable to the construction of a medium-sized school – became the subject of criticism. Despite these difficulties, construction work began in February 1968 and the church was solemnly consecrated as early as September 1969.

The Temppeliaukio Church is an underground temple, carved into massive granite rocks. From the outside, only the copper dome that protrudes from beyond the stone blocks is visible. The interior of the church is oval-shaped, and its rough walls of natural rock create an unusual atmosphere. The vaulting of the building is a huge disk made of copper wire, which gives the space a unique character.

The illumination of the church’s interior is provided by the sun’s natural rays, which come in through 180 glass panels placed between the dome and the walls. This unusual arrangement makes the interior bright and airy, while maintaining an intimate, spiritual feel. Thanks to its excellent acoustics, the church is also used as a concert hall, attracting worshippers and music lovers alike.

Temppeliaukio Church is not only a place of worship, but also an important symbol of contemporary architecture. Its innovative form and harmonious combination with the surrounding landscape have been the subject of numerous architectural publications, and the church itself has gained international recognition. Today, the Rock Church is one of the most visited places in Helsinki, attracting tourists and architects from all over the world who want to see for themselves this unusual combination of art, nature and spirituality.
