Tenement house at Bolesława Chrobrego 4 – neo-Baroque gem from the Kłodzko market square

The tenement house at 4 Bolesława Chrobrego Square in Kłodzko is a historic building located on the south-east frontage of the market square, on the corner with Wita Stwosza Street. The history of this place dates back to the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries, when, as a result of the location of Kłodzko and the delimitation of the market square, the first houses, probably wooden, were built here. From those times, the buildings on this corner served as the town inn.

The first mention of the building dates from 1418 and speaks of an inn (Teberne), which was used by travellers passing through Kłodzko towards Prague and Wrocław. In 1477 the Count Henry I the Elder of Klodzko granted it the right to sell beer and wine, and in 1517 Count Ulrich von Hardeck allowed beer to be brewed in the inn. Unfortunately, the first building burned down in a fire on 25 March 1676. A new building was constructed in 1751.

One hundred years later, the inn was replaced by a new two-storey building in Neo-Renaissance style, which housed the Taberne restaurant and the city theatre. At the end of the 19th century, the old restaurant was demolished and construction of a neo-Baroque building began in its place, which housed, among others, the then Glatzer Bank (Kłodzko Bank). Construction work was completed in 1904.

The tenement house at 4 Bolesława Chrobrego Square is a corner building of considerable size, built in the Neo-Baroque style. A characteristic element is the tower-vault topped with a helmet, located on the corner. In addition, attention is drawn to the decorative gables, balconies, portal and window frames, which add to the building’s unique charm. In the ground floor and part of the basement on the side of Wita Stwosza Street, large glazed commercial premises have been installed.

Currently, part of the tenement houses the Co-operative Bank, which testifies to the historical continuity of the place.
