The 1990s Centre underground canopy will disappear. Tender announced

The shape resembles cut tubes. Built as a temporary structure, the Centre Metro canopy will become history. The post-modern architecture of the 1990s will be replaced by new exits to the platforms. The Public Transport Authority of Warsaw has announced a tender for the replacement of three such canopies.

They are a characteristic element of Line 1 of the Warsaw metro. The semi-circular tubes were created as a temporary solution, but despite the passage of several decades, only now will they be replaced. A year ago, one of these canopies at Świętokrzyska station was successfully replaced thanks to a private investor. The tube was replaced by a glass structure resembling the letter “M”, known from the second metro line. We wrote about this change HERE.

An announcement for the replacement of three shelters over the stairs and one lift canopy has appeared on the website of the Public Transport Authority. The operation is to cover the canopies on the northern side of the Centrum metro station – closer to the Palace of Culture and the new Museum of Modern Art. The appearance of the descents to the platforms on the side of the so-called frying pan will not change.

A tender is to select the company that will produce the design documentation and estimate the cost of the works. Only in the next step will a tender for the task be announced.

What will the exits to the platforms look like? The exact look is not yet known, but the contracting authority has indicated the design direction in the tender documentation. The new canopies are to be light and neutral in appearance. The aesthetics are to be consistent. The form of the canopies is to be perpendicular and fit in with the surroundings.

It is recommended that reference be made to the solutions and details used for the entrances of the Szwedzka, Targówek Mieszkaniowy and Trocka underground stations, based on geometric forms, large areas of glass and the use of architectural concrete and anthracite-painted steel, the documentation reads.

The developer also points out that if large glazing is used, the method of protection against possible collision with birds must be agreed with the Office of Environmental Protection of the Warsaw City Hall. It is also likely that the current wall cladding at the stairs will disappear, to be replaced with a new, contemporary material. ZTM notes, however, that interference with the current interior design of the station exits should be as minimal as possible.

The change of the canopies is intended to improve the aesthetics and make the exits to the platforms fit in with the redeveloped centre and the MSN building. Replacement of the canopies will take place no earlier than 2025.

PS We recently wrote about the bold concept of extending the Warsaw metro to five lines. We published a map of the planned routes HERE
