The modernisation of the amphitheatre in Ryn has become one of the most interesting examples of contemporary public space design in Masuria. The concept was developed by architects Ireneusz Asman and Paweł Pieniężny. The project was conceived as an extension of the existing footpath around Lake Ołów, creating a cohesive, multi-functional recreational area. The new infrastructure includes an amphitheatre, a playground and a beach, and the whole has been planned so that further elements can be added in the future without disrupting the layout of the site.
Ryn is a small, picturesque town in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, with a population of 2,678. Situated between Lakes Ryńskie and Ołów, it forms part of the Great Masurian Lakes trail. The main attractions include a 14th-century Teutonic castle (now a hotel and museum), a lakeside promenade and a recreational path encircling Lake Ołów. The town is characterised by its peaceful atmosphere, well-developed tourist infrastructure and a location conducive to active leisure.
The new amphitheatre was designed as a natural extension of the path around the lake. Where the footpath widens, an entrance plaza leading to the auditorium has been created. The whole structure is sheltered by a brick retaining wall, referencing local building traditions. The designers deliberately minimised interference with the site, utilising the existing slope of the medieval winery of the Teutonic Order as a natural form for the auditorium. The surrounding trees create a kind of green frame that organises the space and reinforces its character.
One of the most recognisable elements of the project is the typographic intervention in the space. The letters ‘r’ and ‘y’ are positioned near the amphitheatre, whilst the letter ‘n’ has been transformed into the stage canopy, framing the view of the lake and bringing the landscape into the interior of the complex. All elements are made of red concrete, the colour of which echoes the local brick buildings. As a result, the typography becomes an integral part of the architecture, whilst also serving as a visual accent that organises the space and gives it a contemporary character.
The design combines architectural and graphic disciplines, creating a space that functions both practically and communicatively. Minimal interference with the landscape, the use of the site’s natural features, and the thoughtful use of materials have made the amphitheatre a new, distinctive landmark of Ryn – a place that highlights the qualities of its surroundings and reinforces the town’s identity.
