The artist’s Prague flat. This is what it looks like after renovation

In the heart of Prague’s Holešovice, on the first floor of a historic building from the late 1920s, there is a unique flat where the painter Lucie Michnová lives. The artist’s flat was designed by Studio Plus One Architects, who transformed a small space into a place full of light, functionality and artistic expression.

The Czech artist’s flat is only 35 square metres. The small interior underwent a complete metamorphosis with the aim of creating a fully functional and aesthetically pleasing living space on a limited budget. The designers opted for radical changes to the layout – traditional divisions between rooms were eliminated, allowing light and space to flow freely. Thanks to these solutions, even the shadiest corners of the flat gained a new, dynamic character.

Small budget, big effect

A minimalist colour scheme based on two colours – classic white and natural wood tones – gives the interior a pristine purity and timelessness. The light polyurethane-coated floor, white walls and birch plywood elements work together to create an elegant, cohesive whole. Mirrored details, such as the finish of the shoe cabinet doors, not only reflect light but visually enlarge the space.

The thoughtful layout of the rooms is one of the key strengths of the project. Upon entering the flat, a hallway with built-in wardrobes leads directly to a balcony door, offering views of the vibrant streets of Prague. To the left, the situated shoe cupboard flows seamlessly into the area…. bar area, while on the right, the edge of the kitchen worktop gently directs guests’ attention towards the main living area, where an impressive, large-format artwork by the owner takes centre stage.

The kitchen connects to the partially open bathroom, distinguished by its modern features. The raised bathroom platform introduces additional dynamics, while the glass shower cubicle with a frosted finish also serves as a subtle light panel. There is also a functional washbasin in the mix of bathroom space, and the toilet – discreetly placed behind a small door – completes the overall design.

An original idea counts

Budget constraints did not prevent the designers from achieving a top-quality finish. Details such as the rough relief running along the perimeter of the bathroom and the dining bar add depth and character to the interior. Contrasting colour accents, subtly appearing above the kitchen worktop and in the bathroom area, introduce an element of playfulness and dynamism, which further emphasises the unique style of the flat.

The artist’s redesigned flat is an example of how even a small space can be transformed with creative architectural solutions, giving it new life. This project shows that functionality and aesthetics do not have to be at odds – they can be combined to create interiors that inspire and change the way we think about urban living. The result is a place that is not only full of light and space, but also carries an artistic soul that makes every detail tell its own story.
