The second stage of the construction of the Museum of Underwater Archaeology and Baltic Fisheries was completed in Łeba. Technical inspections carried out have confirmed the quality of the work carried out and its compliance with current standards. Although the construction of the main building has come to an end, the investment is not yet complete. Further work is planned in the coming years to prepare the permanent exhibition, which will lead to the official opening of the facility in 2027. The Baltic Museum in Łeba has a chance to be among the most interesting educational and research centres in Poland.
Finalising technical acceptance of the museum in Łeba
At the end of 2024, the facility underwent comprehensive safety tests, including a fire inspection and a hygiene and sanitary assessment. The State Fire Service and the Sanitary Inspection thoroughly verified the condition of the installations as well as the alarm and security systems, confirming that the highest safety standards were met. A key element was also the inspection of the monitoring and security systems, which will play an important role in the museum’s day-to-day operations and the protection of exhibits.
Baltic Museum in Łeba – changes to the surroundings and new exhibits
In preparation for the opening of the museum, trees were planted in the building’s surroundings, which not only enriched the landscape but also emphasised the institution’s commitment to environmental protection. Representatives of the city and the National Maritime Museum in Gdańsk, among others, took part in this work. In the meantime, a spectacular exhibit – a single-cylinder marine engine weighing more than four tonnes and manufactured in Denmark in 1967 – has found its way into the museum. In the future, it will become part of a permanent exhibition, alongside many other valuable objects documenting the history of Baltic fisheries and underwater archaeology.
Cooperation with the local community of Łeba
The museum has established cooperation with the Łeba Municipal Library, signing a letter of intent on future educational and cultural initiatives. Plans include the organisation of competitions, temporary exhibitions, literary meetings and a maritime book fair. This cooperation will create a unique space for the popularisation of maritime heritage in the region.
The Baltic Museum in Łeba is a unique facility on a national scale
The modern museum will not only host exhibitions, but will also be a centre for research into underwater archaeology and the history of Baltic fisheries. Its design, by the Plus3Architekci studio, is inspired by the sea, sandy shores and wind-filled sails. The visual qualities of the building are complemented by ecological energy solutions. The permanent exhibition, which will be mounted in the following years, will present the history of sailing in the Baltic Sea and archaeological underwater discoveries, as well as touching on the topic of offshore wind energy. The final stage of the investment will last until 2027, with funding provided by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. The museum in Łeba already promises to be one of the most interesting educational and research centres in Poland.
