Almost 20 years after the first announcements, construction of the Big Boy Building skyscraper has begun in Gdańsk’s Przymorze Wielkie district. The development on Lecha Kaczyńskiego Street, near the Marina Primore housing estate, is being carried out by the Hossa Group. The building will reach a height of 99 metres and will be among the tallest structures in the city.
Big Boy Building in Gdańsk
The first reports about the “Big Boy” appeared in June 2007 and immediately attracted a great deal of interest. The initial concept envisaged a skyscraper measuring as much as 202 metres, which would have clearly towered over most of the Tri-City’s tallest buildings. By way of comparison, Olivia Star stands at 180 metres, whilst the taller of the Sea Towers in Gdynia is 125 metres high. In the years that followed, however, the design was modified on numerous occasions, and the final version was significantly scaled down. Planning permission was granted in 2022, whilst the first preparatory and groundworks began a few months ago.
99 metres and a variety of functions
The building under construction will have 29 above-ground storeys and one underground storey. The total floor area will be nearly 24,750 square metres. The 12 lower floors will house a hotel with a restaurant, catering facilities and a spa and wellness area. The Hossa Group has not yet decided whether the hotel will operate under an international brand or remain the investor’s own venture. A single-storey car park will also be built beneath the building.

Big Boy in an interesting neighbourhood
The top 17 storeys will be occupied by residential units. Most of these will feature glazed loggias, whilst some will have open terraces offering views of the surrounding area. The development’s location is ideal for future residents. It is around 900 metres from the beach, and right next door lies Ronald Reagan Park, covering an area of around 85 hectares – the largest park in Gdańsk.
The building will be visible from afar
The skyscraper will feature a distinctly rounded crown and a vertical band of glazing running across the façade. This will be its distinguishing feature and hallmark. Until now, the Big Boy Building has mainly existed as an ambitious concept and the subject of numerous discussions. Today, the project has entered the construction phase and, once completed, will transform the skyline of Przymorze Wielkie as its main landmark.
