Warsaw will allocate an additional PLN 45 million for the expansion of the Warsaw Rising Museum. Councillors took the decision to do so during the October session of the City Council, adopting changes to the budget and the Long-term Financial Forecast for 2025-2055. The funds constitute the city’s contribution to the investment co-financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. These decisions will make it possible to start the long-awaited modernisation phase of one of the capital’s most important cultural institutions.
The “design and build” formula
The project will be carried out under the “design and build” formula. The selected consortium will prepare the documentation, obtain permits and carry out the construction. Eight companies participated in the tender, and the most favourable offer was submitted by the consortium of NDI and NDI Sopot. The value of the contract is PLN 138.9 million, and the work is expected to take about three and a half years. The use of this formula is intended to ensure the consistency of the architectural concept and accelerate the realisation of the investment.
Expansion of the Warsaw Rising Museum
The extension will make it possible to significantly enlarge the exhibition and introduce modern forms of history presentation. The new pavilion will contain the entrance area with ticket offices, a shop and cloakroom, while underground there will be an auditorium for 300 people and a temporary exhibition hall. The project also includes technical rooms and storage facilities, as well as a green roof accessible to visitors. The pavilion will be connected to the main museum building by an underground passage. The new spaces will facilitate educational events, workshops and scientific conferences.

Rafał Trzaskowski on the investment
President Rafał Trzaskowski emphasised that the expansion has a symbolic and social dimension. As he pointed out, the museum is a place of common remembrance for Varsovians regardless of their views. The investment is part of the capital’s cultural infrastructure development strategy, which aims to interpret history in a modern way and make it accessible to future generations. The project is also intended to strengthen Warsaw’s position as a city that cares for the preservation and modern presentation of its historical heritage.
History of the Warsaw Rising Museum
The Warsaw Rising Museum has been operating since 2004 in the former tramway power station on Grzybowska Street. Since its opening it has attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors a year and is one of the most important memorial sites in the country. It conducts educational, scientific and cultural activities, commemorating the participants of the uprising and the history of occupied Warsaw. The museum’s exhibitions are known for their modern form of narration, which combines authentic witness accounts with multimedia media.
A new stage of development by Nizio Design
The concept for the expansion was developed by the Mirosław Nizio studio, winner of an architectural competition a few years ago. The project envisages turning the entrance towards Towarowa Street and creating spaces that are better adapted to the needs of contemporary audiences. Once the investment has been completed, the museum will gain new possibilities for action and will even more fully fulfil its mission of disseminating knowledge about the Warsaw Uprising.
