The White House will soon have a new representative space. Work has just been announced to begin on the construction of the Ballroom, which will be used for official state ceremonies and diplomatic events. The investment announced by President Donald J. Trump responds to the long-standing needs of successive administrations, which until now have had to use small rooms or temporary tents.
The White House: a project to meet the needs of future administrations
The new Ballroom is to cover an area of around 8,400 sq m and provide seating for 650 people. It will thus replace the largest representative interior of the White House to date, the East Room, which could only accommodate 200 guests. The hall is to be permanently integrated into the architecture of the complex, without having to resort to temporary solutions.

The team responsible for the design and construction
McCrery Architects, known for its classic architectural projects, is responsible for the design. Its director, Jim McCrery, stressed the importance of the historic nature of the development and the need to align the form with the existing architecture. Clark Construction has been entrusted with the construction work, while AECOM is responsible for the engineering design. Work is scheduled to begin in September 2025. Construction is expected to be completed before the end of President Trump’s current term.
Financing and security aspects
The cost of implementation is estimated to be around $200 million. Funding for the construction is expected to come from private donations pledged by President Trump and other funders. The US Secret Service will be responsible for bringing the new facility up to security requirements. The hall will be built on the site of the current east wing, which has been rebuilt several times since its construction in 1902.

New space and classic form
The new Ballroom will be separate from the main White House building, but its design and architectural solutions are intended to follow the existing building. According to the announcements, the investment is to combine respect for tradition with functionality and openness to the needs of future administrations. As the head of the Office of the President emphasised, President Trump is actively involved in the design process and is making efforts to ensure that the new space is consistent with the historic character of the site.
The White House – an outline of the history
The US President’s residence was designed by James Hoban, with construction completed in 1800. It was inspired by neoclassical architecture, referencing Palladianism and the Georgian style. After the War of 1812, during which the building was burnt down by British troops, Hoban oversaw its reconstruction. In the following decades, the White House was extended several times. In 1902, President Theodore Roosevelt commissioned interior remodelling and the construction of the West Wing. The largest intrusion into the building took place between 1948 and 1952 during Harry Truman’s term. At that time, the outdated interiors were completely demolished and reconstructed using a steel structure, but retaining the original façade.
Today, the White House remains one of the most recognisable buildings in the United States as a symbol of power and statesmanship. The new Ballroom will be the next step in its centuries-old history.
