The Factory Oak has lost a branch. It is the European Tree of the Year 2023!

The Fabrykant oak, which was named European Tree of the Year 2023, recently lost one of its sizable branches. The famous tree from Klepacz Park is now under the care of specialists, who indicate that the situation is not good, but there is no reason to panic.

The probable cause is ‘summer branch snapping’. The phenomenon is that the developing leaves increase their surface area to absorb the sun’s rays more effectively, so that their weight increases significantly. Gravity, combined with drought, can then lead to branches breaking off. No alarming phenomena have been detected by specialists. The oak is under constant expert care

Fabryant oak – description

The Fabrykant Oak, also called Jagosz, is a monumental pedunculate oak growing in the Bishop Michał Klepacz Park in Łódź. It is a characteristic tree of the city of Łódź. Its huge and long branches branch out almost perpendicularly from the main trunk, spreading horizontally at a height of about 1.5m. The oak’s girth exceeds 450 cm . The specimen grows in the central part of the park, which also contains 23 other monumental trees. The oak has been protected since 1990 and the applicable legal basis is a 2015 resolution of the City Council of Łódź. Its age is estimated to be 150-200 years. Based on archival measurements of the tree, it can be presumed to be around 165 years old. This is likely because the Richter garden was created in the second half of the 19th century and the oak may have been planted, as one of the first trees in the area
