The flat in Krakow needed some improvements. This is what it looks like after the changes.

This is a brief story of a flat in Krakow, which had already undergone a costly renovation, yet still did not give the owner a sense of order. Instead of harmony, there was chaos, and previous design decisions had resulted in a collection of inconsistent solutions. The materials did not work well together, the proportions were off, and the individual elements functioned as separate worlds. As a result, instead of comfort, there was chaos, and the whole did not want to come together into a logical, cooperative structure.

Organising the existing chaos

Polański Studio took over the project at a time when it would have been easiest to take a shortcut and start from scratch. The owner had already undergone a costly renovation, which, however, did not provide comfort. Instead of a coherent interior, there was a collection of elements, each operating on its own terms. So the architects began with an analysis: which parts could be preserved and which needed to be redesigned.

This selection became the foundation for further action. Only then was it possible to organise the accents, materials and details so that the whole began to function as a coherent organism. The interior was not demolished. It was reclaimed.

A palette that calms and organises

The design is based on muted colours and refined proportions. Warm wood is combined with light backgrounds, and subdued surfaces are complemented by stone accents. As a result, the flat has gained an atmosphere of calm, but has not fallen into blandness.

Consistency in the layout and material transitions has restored the fluidity that was previously lacking. The zones began to merge naturally, without random contrasts. This logic is particularly evident in the living area, which includes the living room, dining room and kitchen. Instead of flashy tricks, there is precision, which builds comfort of use.

Plants for a better composition

One of the strongest motifs of the design are large plants, introduced in a conscious and decisive manner. They do not serve as decoration, but actually work within the composition. They define viewing axes, build scale and balance the calm geometry of the structures. It is a simple technique that adds naturalness and softness to the interior, while reinforcing its orderly structure.

Architect Tomasz Polański called this project “Reanimation of Silence”. This is an apt description, as the studio managed to restore order and a sense of comfort to a space that was previously chaotic.
