The grasslands below Lublin Castle will undergo revitalisation. The cost is more than 20 million zł

Preparations have begun in Lublin for one of the most important investments in recent years in the area of public spaces. Błonia pod Zamkiem, which for years has served as a natural recreational facility for residents, will soon be given a completely new quality. The city has just announced a tender to carry out a comprehensive revitalisation of the area, the value of which is estimated at more than PLN 22 million. The project has been prepared by GARDEN CONCEPT Landscape Architects.

Historical background of the site

The Błonia, located at the foot of Lublin’s castle, is an area of exceptional historical and landscape significance. For centuries it has been an open space where city life took place, fairs were organised and residents met. Over time, the area has become a place for strolling and relaxation, but in recent years it has lost some of its former charm and needed extensive modernisation. The revitalisation is intended to restore Błonia to its rightful place in Lublin’s landscape and create a modern public space that meets the contemporary needs of the inhabitants.

Walls under the castle for everyone

The project aims to create an open and friendly park for different user groups. There will be places for family recreation, as well as activity zones for the elderly or less able-bodied people. New pedestrian and bicycle paths will make it easier to get around, and an extensive technical infrastructure will provide adequate facilities for outdoor events. The investment is part of the city’s wider strategy to develop green public spaces and promote active lifestyles.

New recreational offer

At the heart of the revitalised Błonia will be a modern play and activity zone. With children in mind, there will be a variety of swings, sculptures and rockers, as well as extensive climbing structures. Adults and seniors, meanwhile, will benefit from an outdoor gym, a boules pitch and numerous resting areas. The park will also include a bicycle repair station and water springs. The whole project will be designed in such a way that the space will be functional all year round.

Greenery and small architecture

The revitalisation includes extensive planting of trees and shrubs that will change their appearance with the seasons. Among the planned species are oaks, magnolias, ornamental apple trees or hydrangeas. An important element will also be bioretention basins planted with aquatic plants, which will allow better management of rainwater. The space will be complemented by small architecture: more than 100 different types of benches, deckchairs, chairs and waste bins.

Błonia pod Zamkiem in the European Capital of Culture 2029 programme

The new face of Błonia pod Zamkiem is to become an important element of Lublin’s preparations for its role as European Capital of Culture in 2029. It is in this space that the most important artistic and social events will take place, including the Carnaval Sztukmistrzów, the Jagiellonian Fair or the East of Culture – Other Sounds festival. In this way, the park will become an attractive place for everyday relaxation and at the same time a showcase for the city promoted in Europe.

The cost of the investment is more than PLN 22.4 million. More than PLN 10 million will be covered by the European Funds for Lubelskie for 2021-2027, and more than PLN 2 million comes from the state budget. Completion of the works is planned for the second half of 2027.
