The green track on Marszałkowska Street is getting closer. Offers from companies have been opened

Warsaw continues to implement the New Warsaw Centre project, which aims to improve the aesthetics and functionality of urban space. One of the key elements of this initiative is the modernised green track on Marszałkowska Street. The investment process is gaining momentum – tenders for the realisation of this investment have already been opened, and all of them are within the budget. The work is planned for the holiday season, which will allow the modernisation to be carried out more efficiently.

Modernisation of tracks on Marszałkowska Street – a step towards a green avenue

Marszałkowska Street, one of the most important arteries in Warsaw’s city centre, will soon have a completely new look. As part of the reconstruction, new pedestrian crossings, bicycle paths and a green track will be created. The city authorities are aiming for the street to become a modern and aesthetically pleasing avenue, in line with the vision of the New Centre of Warsaw. The tender concerns the modernisation of an approximately one-kilometre-long section of track between Widok and Królewska streets. Three companies took part in the proceedings: Balzola with a bid of around PLN 24.25 million, Strabag proposing to carry out the work for PLN 26.13 million and Instalnika, whose bid is PLN 32.92 million. The budget earmarked for this investment is PLN 34.97 million, which means that all the proposals fall within the assumed financial framework. The tender committee is currently analysing the documentation and assessing the offers in terms of their compliance with the tender criteria.

Green track on Marszałkowska Street – investment divided into two stages

The project has been divided into two parts. The first, basic one, covers reconstruction of the track bed between Widok Street and the intersection with Królewska Street, excluding the intersection with Świętokrzyska, which was modernised during the construction of the central section of Line 2 of the Underground. Works in the area of the intersection of Marszałkowska and Królewska are also envisaged as an option, including the reconstruction of the Królewska stop, the modernisation of the gas pipeline and the adjustment of the road system. Thanks to favourable bids, it will be possible to complete both the basic and optional parts. The modernisation of the trackbed will improve the fluidity of tram traffic, removing existing speed restrictions and reducing the noise of trams passing. On the section from Królewska to Świętokrzyska, a green trackbed with sedum will be created, while towards the Dmowskiego roundabout, a passable development will be used, which takes into account the needs of ambulances.

More greenery in Warsaw’s city centre and new traffic solutions

Modernisation of the tracks is not the only change that awaits Marszałkowska Street. Along the tracks, there will be separation strips intended for future plantings of high and low greenery, carried out by the City Roads Management. As part of the project, new pedestrian crossings and bicycle crossings will also be created – at the level of Złota and Sienkiewicza streets. Changes will also include traffic organisation for drivers. A U-turn will be set up in the area of Złota Street, which will enable drivers to change direction without having to reach the Dmowskiego roundabout, while a left turn will be created in Sienkiewicza Street to facilitate access to the Złota-Zgoda quarter.

Green track on Marszałkowska Street – difficulties and schedule of works

The works will involve temporary suspension of tram traffic between the Metro Ratusz Arsenal and Centrum stops for a period of about 3.5 months – from June to October 2025. A temporary traffic organisation will be introduced on the remaining sections of Marszałkowska Street and Andersa Street, allowing two-way trams to be used. As part of the Tram Acceleration programme, additional renovations will be carried out on adjacent sections of the tram network. These will include the modernisation of the track bed at Bankowy Square and the renovation of the track between Królewska and Senatorska.

New Warsaw Centre for residents

The project to rebuild the tracks on Marszałkowska Street is another step in transforming Warsaw into a modern and resident-friendly city. A green track, new pedestrian crossings and improved cycling and road infrastructure will make Marszałkowska Street more functional, environmentally friendly and comfortable for users.
