The historic building on Aksamitna Street in Gdańsk will undergo renovation

In the very heart of Gdańsk’s Old Town, at Aksamitna 4, there is a building with a rich history that will soon undergo extensive modernisation. Gdañskie Nieruchomości are planning a comprehensive renovation of the building, which has served a variety of functions over the years – from a military forge, to craft workshops, to a community shop. Thanks to the upcoming renovation, it will regain its former glory, once again becoming an important element of the urban space. It is not yet known how it will be developed.

4 Velvet Street – scope of the planned renovation

The project involves the renovation of both the façade and the interior, as well as bringing the building up to contemporary use standards. The key aim of the investment is both to preserve the historic character of the building and to improve its energy efficiency. The works will be carried out in accordance with conservation guidelines, in order to take into account the historic character of the site as much as possible.

History of the building

Built between 1872 and 1880, the building was probably originally used as a military forge. It was located near the former barracks and stables (today’s building at 4a Velvet Street), indicating its original functions related to the service of the cavalry. Evidence of this period are the metal hooks preserved on the façade, which may have been used to tie up the horses. There is also speculation that a guardhouse may have functioned in the building. One of the interesting traces of the past is the signature of Canon Ruhde from 1897 on one of the walls.

After the demilitarisation of Gdańsk in 1920, the building lost its original purpose. In the following years it was used for economic purposes, probably as a workshop or a small manufactory. After the Second World War, due to urban changes, its importance gradually diminished until it was finally adapted for use as a community shop.

4 Velvet Street and a new chapter in its history

The renovation of this historic building is another step in restoring the splendour of Gdansk’s historic spaces. Thanks to the works carried out, Aksamitna 4 will gain not only a renewed appearance, but also new functions, adapted to the contemporary needs of the inhabitants.
