It recently celebrated its 50th birthday. The Togo sofa is an iconic piece of furniture whose popularity continues unabated. The design developed years ago is still attractive and successfully decorates interiors. How did the sofa come about? We recall its history.
The Togo sofa was designed in 1973 in France. Its creator was Michel Ducaroy, who created the furniture for the Ligne Roset company. In the same year, the furniture was presented at the Paris Furniture Fair, where the sofa attracted a lot of interest. Several factors contributed to this.
The Togo sofa is groundbreaking because it is the first piece of lounge furniture made of foam material. The sofa has acquired a bold, somewhat playful form. It looks like a half-folded wrinkled mattress or a half-squeezed tube of toothpaste. Everyone who looks at it has some sort of association. In retrospect, it can be said that the bold design was a hit. To this day, the Togo series of furniture adorns interiors in a variety of styles. This can be seen, for example, on Instagram.
Another advantage of the furniture is its modularity. As early as the 1970s, the designer saw the potential in creating a series whose elements could be combined and adapted to suit current needs. In total, the Togo furniture collection consists of an armchair, a two-seater sofa, a three-seater sofa, a corner sofa, a chaise longue and a pouffe. There is also a junior version of the armchair, for children. The multitude of elements gives great arrangement possibilities.
Under the upholstery fabric there is polyether foam of various densities. The different foam densities affect comfort. The large seat and high backrest, which seems to wrap around the sitter, are important here. This is a piece of furniture ideal for relaxation.
A big plus is the high quality of the furniture. The sofa is manufactured by hand with the utmost precision in a production facility in France. This affects the rather high price. However, we are dealing with a design icon, so when buying the Togo sofa you can feel like an art collector. With more than 1.5 million pieces sold, it is Ligne Roset’s most popular piece of furniture.
