The house from 1905 has been given new life. The architects here have managed to preserve the spirit of the past

In a picturesque village in the Orlické Mountains, where the town road directly turns into a meadow and all you can see through the windows is the beautiful mountain views, a unique place has been created. The house from 1905, which was in a deplorable state until recently, underwent a comprehensive reconstruction. Thanks to the work of Kwadraton architects and the commitment of the investors, the building has become an ideal habitat for family reunions and gatherings with friends, while retaining the authentic character and spirit of the past.

The original structure consisted of two parts: the living area, made of kiln-dried, unfired brick, and a stone barn built of slate – a popular material in the region. Although the investors initially considered demolishing the building, the unusual charm of the stone cellar, segmental ceiling and sandstone portals determined the decision to retain the original elements.

The design for the reconstruction of the house in the Orlické Mountains was based on a harmonious combination of traditional materials and modern technologies, while adapting the space to meet the contemporary needs of the users. The works included several key stages. The construction work included a comprehensive renovation of the foundations, which ensured the durability and stability of the structure. New insulation was also installed to protect the building from damp. As part of the work, original façade details such as window bands and woodwork divisions were also restored, faithfully referencing the building’s original character.

Particularly noteworthy are the wooden doors, which have been restored with attention to the smallest detail. The roof has been enhanced with a new rafter framing and anthracite concrete tile roofing, which adds a slightly contemporary touch.

The interior of the house is divided into functional zones – a kitchen with dining area and a playroom connected to the living room. An elegant wooden staircase with modern glass balustrades leads to the first floor, which subtly captures the spirit of tradition. During the conversion process, many original elements were retained, emphasising the historic character of the building. Slate from the demolished part of the barn was used as cladding for the gable walls and bay window, giving the façade a unique idyllic charm. The sandstone portal was carefully cleaned and impregnated to enhance its beauty. The wooden ceiling beams, one of the key elements of the architecture, were also restored – they were cleaned, impregnated and painted white.

The interiors of the house are bright, spacious and decorated in a style that combines Scandinavian simplicity with rustic touches. The kitchen, with its retro designer cooker in olive colour and graphite hood, is the heart of the house. The black and white diamond-patterned floor harmonises with the white walls and black accessories. The unique atmosphere of the playroom and living room is emphasised by the restored furniture and the large rectangular window with comfortable seating. The bathroom, kept in an elegant style, completes the interior with its white tiles and classic terracotta. The upstairs space, with its mezzanine floor and trapezoidal window, offers an extraordinary view of the surrounding nature.

The house is surrounded by a garden with a natural character, reminiscent of the mountain landscape. The slopes and walls are lined with slate, while a stone waterfall and a wooden gate leading into the woods complete the look. The adjoining barn, with its original brick pillars and overlapping gable boarding, has been converted into a garage with space for wood and tools.

The converted house from 1905 has become a special place – both for its owners and for everyone who crosses the threshold of this mountain habitat. By preserving the original elements and harmoniously combining them with modern materials, a space full of light, comfort and warmth has been created.
