The interior of a modernist villa in Poznań’s Grunwald district. It’s beautiful!

Situated in the old part of Poznań’s Grunwald district, next to the Abisynia housing estate, the inter-war villa has been given a new lease of life thanks to a thorough renovation and reconstruction designed by the LBWA studio. The building, a classic example of 1930s modernist architecture, is characterised by its geometric form and refined proportions, devoid of any decorative details.

Functional and modern interior of a modernist villa

The new owners set the architects an ambitious task: to create a space that was functional, modern and comfortable without compromising the original, noble architectural form. The interior of the modernist villa had to be transformed in accordance with the rhythm of the residents’ day and the demands of modern lifestyles. The layout of the world sides and the characteristic disposition of the period rooms required a high degree of design precision.

Original details and noble materials

The interiors have retained many historical elements: wooden window and door frames, as well as the original floors. The new additions – including furniture and built-ins – have been designed in a spirit of minimalism so as to emphasise, rather than overwhelm, the authenticity of the building. This is complemented by subtle brass elements that reference the original door and window hardware.

Living area overlooking the garden

The living area of the flat is located on the first floor. On the east side is the kitchen with access to the balcony – ideal for a morning coffee. Its focal point is an island made of natural stone and tall cabinets in earthy beige, broken by brass details. The kitchen flows seamlessly into a spacious living room with a panoramic window overlooking the west side of the garden. It is a place for relaxation, meetings and display – attention is drawn to a painting by Marek Okrasa and harmoniously arranged vintage furniture.

Dining room and guest room in the former layout

From the living room, a passage leads to the dining room with its restored original library and to the guest room, which serves as a TV room. The large bi-fold doors connecting these two rooms preserve the original layout of the villa, while providing flexibility of use.

Thoughtful layout of the private area

A sleeping area has been planned for the second floor. The master bedroom overlooking the garden is combined with a spacious bathroom and two dressing rooms. The bathroom features lime stone in a grey tone and a free-standing bathtub – a kind of bathing room with an original planked floor. The whole is complemented by prints by Henryk Płóciennik.

Children’s room full of light

Next to the bedroom is a spacious children’s room with large windows overlooking the garden. Adjacent to it is a bathroom with striking green marble and light oak and terrazzo elements. The interior harmoniously combines functionality with sophisticated style, perfectly matching the character of the entire house.

Atmospheric interior of a modernist villa with character

The interior of a modernist villa in the Grunwald district of Poznań is a perfect example of a contemporary interpretation of classic modernism. LBWA’s architects have approached the historic substance of the building with respect, while creating a space that is functional, elegant and warm. Vintage furniture, artworks from a private collection and precisely chosen lighting details give the interiors a unique character. This project proves that contemporary needs can go hand in hand with historical heritage – creating a truly unique place.
