Life in the city centre is fast-paced, and the daily rush means that a flat becomes more than just a functional space. The owners of this Poznań flat, who work in the bustling city centre every day, needed a place where they could regain their balance. The flat, situated in a picturesque neighbourhood, was to become a private sanctuary – a home spa where every material, line and detail promotes tranquillity. Architects from OYKA Studio undertook the task of designing the interior of this flat in Poznań.
The starting point for the project was the combination of fine, natural materials with soft, flowing forms. The architects at OYKA Studio eschewed sharp divisions in favour of the rounded lines of the joinery, which guide the eye through the various zones of the flat. The dominant shade of natural oak creates a monolithic backdrop for the living area, whilst the rounded corners of the multifunctional built-in units conceal passageways and utility spaces, ensuring the living room remains free from visual clutter. Against this tranquil backdrop, the light-coloured lounge furniture with its soft upholstery, the minimalist joinery and the lush greenery take on a distinct character.
Illuminated quartzite
The undisputed centrepiece of the living area is the backlit Patagonia quartzite. This natural stone, known for its intricate mineral patterns and translucent textures, has been framed within the kitchen unitry. Backlit from behind, the splashback emits a warm, golden light after dark, transforming the kitchen into a relaxing light installation. The kitchen units themselves are finished in a light, satin shade, providing a harmonious backdrop for the striking stone.
Bedroom
The master bedroom builds on the concept of the entire interior, offering its most tranquil interpretation. The architects have created a composition rich in textures that soothes the senses of touch and sight. The central element is a sculptural headboard made of vertical, rounded rollers upholstered in a thickly woven, plush fabric. Its organic pattern in shades of beige and graphite evokes mineral structures and tree bark. The headboard is set within an oak frame, into which suspended bedside cabinets with polished quartzite tops have been integrated. The walls are clad in subtle, linen-weave wallpaper, creating a soft backdrop for the undulating mirror and the sculptural pendant lights. The ensemble is complemented by an oak wardrobe with distinctive round handles which, when closed, form a perfect circle.
A microcosm of minimalism
The space dedicated to the youngest resident is a microcosm where aesthetics harmoniously intertwine with a child’s imagination. The concept of organic minimalism has been translated here into furniture with soft, rounded shapes, reminiscent of terrazzo in texture. It is crafted from a light-coloured material speckled with warm pigments. A low, deep navy blue piece of furniture catches the eye; it is finished with a decorative, wavy moulding that also serves as a shelf for books and toys. The wall next to the cot is adorned with graphic wallpaper featuring a jungle motif and exotic animals. The look is complemented by textiles in shades of beige, a round leopard-print rug and built-in wooden wardrobes.
Home spa
The bathroom forms a cohesive bathing space, featuring sculptural Oxford Grey marble. This marble was used to create a monolithic, integrated washbasin with a geometric yet gentle form, upon which deep, distinctive veining is visible. The elegant marble palette harmonises with the satin-finished, light-coloured wall surfaces, the mosaic and the mirrored cabinet fronts. The space is complemented by a freestanding bath with an organic form and jewellery-like fittings with a diamond-cut finish. Together, these elements tell a mature story of an interior that envelops you in warmth, promotes tranquillity and helps you regain your inner balance.
