In a world where brands are competing to use ever more garish colours, New Balance proves that the greatest power lies in… grey! It is a colour that is characteristic of the brand’s iconic trainers and a colour that now has its own celebration. This year, the May celebrations of Grey Days mark not only new launches and a branding campaign, but also serve as a reminder of how New Balance can creatively draw on its own heritage.
Grey first appeared in New Balance designs in the 1980s, when runners were tackling increasingly urbanised routes. The neon accents of the competition bounced off the tarmac like warning signals, whilst NB opted for a colour that blended in with the city and its architecture. This pragmatic choice quickly became the brand’s hallmark, to the extent that today it is hard to imagine New Balance without its characteristic grey palette.
Grey Days 2026 is, however, more than just a celebration of colour. It is also a demonstration of how the brand can reinterpret its extensive design archive. New Balance does not treat history as a museum display case, but as a creative workshop. Old silhouettes become sketches that can be redesigned to meet contemporary needs. This is how models are created that look familiar, but function completely differently from their predecessors from decades ago.
The best example is this year’s ABZORB line. A technology that was originally intended simply to absorb shock has now also become an aesthetic element. In the ABZORB 2010, 2000, 5030 and 1890 models, cushioning forms part of the shoe’s visual DNA. This is a rare instance where a technical solution becomes a stylistic motif rather than merely a functional addition. It is worth noting that ABZORB was created as a blend of foam and high-resilience rubber, which disperses the energy of impact, protecting the joints and stabilising the stride. Today, this technology returns in a new form, yet retains its original concept: comfort should be felt, not merely claimed.

The May launches were spread over four weeks, testing the patience of sneaker fans somewhat. On 1 May, The Grey Shop launched, kicking off the month with a selection of models and clothing in shades of grey – from the FuelCell Rebel v5 and 1080v15 running shoes to theskate-inspiredNumeric Andrew Reynolds 993 and Numeric Tiago Lemos 1010. A few days later, on 8 May, the ABZORB 2010 made its debut in a special grey version. It is a model that combines a futuristic silhouette with nods to the classics.
In the second half of the month, the brand is not slowing down. On 15 May, the ABZORB 2000 and (the debut model) ABZORB 5030 went on sale, both inspired by running designs from the early 2000s, with prominent cushioning as a design feature. The finale of May’s launches will take place on 22 May, when the ABZORB 1890, revealing the brand’s technical DNA, and the Numeric 770, returning after three decades in a new,lifestyle-orientedversion, will be unveiled.

The campaign celebrating Grey Days features ambassadors representing different worlds: Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, Darius Garland, Marvin Harrison Jr. and Andrew Reynolds. Each brings their own interpretation of what ‘grey’ means to Grey Days. For some, it is the colour of work and craftsmanship; for others, a symbol of independence. For others still, it is a neutral backdrop against which the wearer’s character shines through most clearly. The campaign is unveiled in a video in which rapper Aminé hoists a grey flag up the flagpole.
An interesting fact is that New Balance’s archives contain hundreds of shoe silhouettes that designers regularly revisit. These are often models that were ahead of their time. It is from such sketches that some of this year’s ABZORB models were born. These are not reconstructions, but interpretations of ideas from years gone by.
Grey Days 2026 is therefore not just a celebration of colour. It is a manifesto of a brand that can combine craftsmanship with innovation, history with modernity, and archival inspirations with the real needs of today’s users. Grey proves once again that it doesn’t have to shout to attract attention.
