The new building of the Academy of Music in Poznań. This is what it will look like!

The competition to find out what the new building of the Academy of Music in Poznań will look like has ended. The Competition Jury decided that the concept by the WXCA studio was the best of the proposals submitted.

The Competition Jury awarded three prizes and two equivalent distinctions. First prize was awarded to WXCA. Second prize the PL.architekci studio. The third prize went to the PROLOG studio. Distinctions went to the studios: CDF Architekci and 22Architekci.

When working on the design of the I. J. Paderewski Academy of Music in Poznan, the architects wanted to create a timeless building that would fit harmoniously into the traditional architecture and urban planning of the city. At the same time, it was important to respond to contemporary needs.

Continuing the urban fabric, the Academy of Music building becomes an integral part of its surroundings, subtly accentuating its unique function through its sculptural form resulting from the internal functional layout,” describe the authors of the project.

The largest part of the new building is the dominant feature, marked on the corner of Grunwaldzka and Matejki streets. The modern edifice is broken up into smaller fragments of varying heights. In this way, the building fits into the street frontage and creates a harmonious whole with its surroundings.

The new building is to serve a cultural function with an opera and theatre stage with the educational tasks of the Academy of Music. This means that the facilities will be used by different groups, from students to culturally thirsty local residents. For this reason, the WXCA team divided the interior by designating zones with differentiated access. In this way, they will be able to operate independently. The central positioning of the Opera and Theatre Hall for 400 people has made it possible to clearly separate the entrance and foyer area from the backstage area.

The Competition Jury justified the choice of the design by the WXCA office by pointing out the strengths of the development: a skilful fit into the complex urban context; the shaping of the elevations on the side of Grunwaldzka and Skryta Streets in the form of sculpted volumes, referring to the scale of the existing buildings; a functionally and spatially coherent dominant element on the side of Grunwaldzka and Matejki Streets; correctly located and solved technology of the auditorium and stage service; a well-designed delivery zone and backstage area for artists; a proper functional layout of the rooms in terms of acoustic requirements; the best response to detailed acoustic and technological guidelines; flexible and activating use of internal communication; effective use of natural light within the compact development.

For the time being, the completion date is unknown.
