The new police station in Polkowice, designed by DEMIURG design & build

Construction of the new headquarters of the Polkowice District Police Headquarters has been completed. The main contractor for the project – DEMIURG design & build – has completed the complex, which will soon serve as a modern working facility for police officers and civilian staff. The building is now ready for use and is awaiting the arrival of the police officers.

The project comprises a complex of three buildings: the main police headquarters building, a garage and technical building with a shooting range, and a building for the canine unit. The entire complex has been designed as a functional and secure facility meeting the modern infrastructure requirements of the uniformed services.

The new headquarters will provide space for over 150 officers and civilian staff, and the total net floor area of all buildings exceeds 3,600 square metres.

A complex of three buildings

The centrepiece of the development is the three-storey Building A, which houses administrative and office spaces, secure offices, command centres and detention facilities designed in accordance with stringent security requirements.

Building B houses garages for police vehicles and training facilities – including a gym and a modern shooting range. The facility has been constructed in accordance with the latest Ministry regulations regarding the construction of police shooting ranges, enabling both traditional shooting training and modern simulations using laser technology. The complex is also equipped with medical facilities enabling an immediate response in situations requiring assistance.

Building C is intended for the canine unit and includes facilities for service dogs, along with a covered parking area.

The facilities form a closed complex with an internal courtyard serving as a car park for police headquarters staff. Charging points for electric vehicles are also located within the courtyard. The infrastructure has been supplemented by a 45-metre telecommunications mast, ensuring operational communication with other units.

Architecture and materials

The complex was designed by the ARP Manecki architectural practice. A distinctive architectural feature is the section of the main building housing the conference room, the form of which has been rotated relative to the main axis of the site and oriented towards the road junction.

The unusual architectural form makes the building stand out against the backdrop of Polkowice’s built environment. Particularly distinctive is the auditorium, whose walls are designed at an angle and whose structure is partially cantilevered over the main entrance to the building. This space will be used for briefings and business meetings, and the room is equipped with a modern audiovisual system and a lighting control system.

High safety standards

The specific nature of a police facility required the installation of numerous security systems and specialised functional solutions. The building includes, amongst other things, detention cells fitted with features to minimise the risk of self-harm, access control systems and an extensive CCTV network comprising several dozen cameras.

During the project, functional changes were also made – the entire second floor of the building was designated for units handling classified information. Consequently, the facility was equipped with specialist telecommunications installations meeting stringent requirements for the protection of classified information. These systems had to obtain the relevant certifications, including from the Internal Security Agency.

A demanding construction project

The construction of the facility was also a technically demanding undertaking. The site was characterised by difficult ground conditions – the subsoil consisted mainly of clay, and the presence of groundwater posed an additional challenge. The entire site is also located in an area affected by mining damage associated with the operation of a nearby copper mine, which required particular precision during the construction of the building.

The ground conditions meant that construction work had to be carried out efficiently and at a suitable pace – rainfall quickly turned the construction site into quagmire.

One of the greatest structural challenges was the construction of the auditorium with sloping walls and a partially projecting structure. During construction, specialist shoring and formwork systems were used, which enabled the safe execution of this unusual structure.

Modern infrastructure for the region’s safety

The new police station is situated in a quiet part of Polkowice, surrounded by green spaces and with convenient transport links. The complex has been designed to ensure a comfortable working environment for police officers whilst meeting the highest safety standards.

– The completion of the new headquarters for the Polkowice District Police Headquarters is a significant milestone for our team. It was a project requiring great precision and excellent coordination across many disciplines, whilst also being of great social importance. “We are delighted to have been able to hand over the completed building, which will soon serve police officers and residents of the region,” says the CEO of DEMIURG design & build.

– This was one of the largest contracts undertaken to date by DEMIURG design & build. As the director of the Wrocław branch, I am proud that we managed to complete such a demanding project right here, together with the team from the Wrocław branch, – emphasises Marcin Śniegowski, director of the Wrocław branch.

The completion of the project marks an important step in the development of public infrastructure in the region and is yet another example of DEMIURG design & build successfully delivering challenging public facilities.
