Budimex has announced the completion of works at the Warszawa Zachodnia station. During the reconstruction, which lasted several years, the facility was open all the time for travellers to use separate zones. The station is soon to be operational in all its glory.
Formally, the modernisation of the railway part of the Warszawa Zachodnia station will last until the end of December 2024. Travellers will be able to use the new subway after the construction of the part of the facility carried out by Tramwaje Warszawskie. The investment is intended to make it easier for passengers to get to the station using public transport.
All platforms of the Warszawa Zachodnia station have already been made available in June 2024. By the end of December, the contractor was finishing work on the railway part of the subway, but work on the tramway part must be completed. This phase is planned from mid-2025.
Western Railway Station now has a huge, wide subway. The underpass allows access to all nine platforms, from both the Wola and Ochota sides. Passengers can travel under the roof even to the distant platform number 9. The entire infrastructure has been equipped with lifts and escalators. The crossing will have ticket offices, waiting rooms and service facilities.
By the end of 2024, we plan to have lifts connecting all platforms with the footbridge over them. At the end of 2024 and the beginning of 2025, buses will return to the final stop at the station on Tunnel Street. Passengers will be able to walk from there to the footbridge that leads to platforms 1-8, or use the subway that leads to platform 9,” announced Piotr Wawrzycki, Area Director, Budimex SA.
The new Warszawa Zachodnia railway station is the largest transport hub in Warsaw. The facility is to be vibrant and enable passengers to wait comfortably for their train departures. PLK SA has begun the procedure related to the commercialisation of retail and service space. 26 premises have been prepared for tenants.
Importantly, the building will also receive new greenery.
In addition to the work on the station hall, we have already planted around 100 trees and over 3,500 shrubs on this project, and we will arrange lawns on an area of 460 sq m,” says Patryk Jaworski, site manager from Budimex.
An important element is also the cycle path laid out along the roadway, which is to split to allow cyclists to access the footbridge over the platforms via a ramp. There are also plans for an exit ramp on the Jerozolimskie Avenue side.
The footbridge, which we handed over a few years ago, has adequate load-bearing capacity, allowing even ambulances to enter and turn around to carry travellers. The second branch of the cycle path leads directly to the new station hall, where we have provided bicycle racks and, in case of greater interest among cyclists, we have also prepared a reserve parking space for single-tracks, Budimex informs.
The modernisation of Warsaw Zachodnia is one of the largest investments of PKP Polskie Linii Kolejowe S.A. in the country. All platforms are covered. Moving stairs, lifts, a dynamic information system and wide passages will facilitate access to trains. It will be easier to combine rail travel with public transport. Safe management of rail traffic will be ensured by modern equipment and computer systems. The project “Works on the Warsaw cross-city line on the section Warsaw East – Warsaw West” is worth approx. pLN 2 billion net.
