The oldest house in Inowrocław will get a new life. It will turn into a place full of music

The oldest fully preserved residential house in Inowrocław stands at 6 Klasztorny Square. The building was erected at the end of the 18th century and today is a valuable example of housing built in Kujawy in the early days of the Partitions of Poland. The historic house, located opposite the Municipal Theatre, will soon be renovated and transformed into a meeting place with live music.

An information sign has been hung on the façade of the building announcing the opening of a catering establishment with the possibility of expansion. The building, which housed, among other things, the People’s Bank for the 19th century, had been in need of restoration work for years. Residents have repeatedly drawn attention to the need for action leading to its renovation. Now, thanks to the initiative of the owner Bogusław Kolanowski, the building will regain its former glory.

Until 2020, the historic house was still inhabited, thanks to which it has retained its original furnishings, including wooden ceilings, box windows and a stylish staircase. Since the building became a vacant lot left without proper care, the priceless interior has been looted. Today, all that remains of the building are bare walls, and the floor and roof trusses are in a very poor state of repair.

The concept is to create a music club here to host concerts and artistic performances. The interiors will be adapted to the new functions, but the design takes into account the preservation of elements characteristic of the building’s architecture. The body of the building will remain intact and the roof will be partially demolished and reconstructed in accordance with the conservation officer’s guidelines. Historic preservation requirements and the proximity of neighbouring buildings posed a challenge to the designers, but they managed to obtain planning permission.

The new premises at 6 Klasztorny Square will be called Old House, which directly refers to the building’s history. Kolanowski’s plans include not only organising musical events, but also running a catering business. The owner already has a complete building design and cost estimate, and the next stage of preparation will be to develop a visualisation of the future interior. It will then be possible to move on to the actual work of restoring one of the city’s historically most important venues.
