In a world where innovation is usually about screens, algorithms and wrist-worn devices, it is rare that a revolution touches an object as ordinary as an umbrella. Yet that is exactly what Ori is doing – the world’s first frameless origami umbrella that folds and unfolds like a precision-engineered sculpture. Behind the project is a new hardware startup led by MIT engineers and the world’s leading origami experts, who set out to reinvent an object that has been virtually unchanged since the mid-19th century.
Ori rejects the traditional design consisting of ribs, plating and movable joints. Instead, it uses an advanced NASA-inspired folding geometry that turns the canopy itself into a support structure. The result is a device that can compress a full-size, metre-long protective surface into a cylindrical form measuring just 3.5 × 23 cm – a size that fits in a pocket.
The key to Ori’s performance lies in a patented architecture based on the Miura pattern, known for its use in space technology. It turns the umbrella canopy into a rigid, self-supporting structure. It unfolds with a single gesture and the whole thing remains stable without the need for any ribs or additional supports.
The team behind the design has filed four patent applications covering the folding system, the locking mechanism and the inner core. Behind the apparent simplicity is years of work on materials, geometry and mechanics of movement.

While the Ori’s design is groundbreaking in its own right, the creators have taken it a step further by introducing a digital layer to the umbrella. A display built into the canopy provides the user with information on air quality through AirSense, and also allows the user to change visual themes responding to weather or mood through MoodShift. The Display Aura system allows personalisation of the colour scheme and Smart Touch provides intuitive one-touch opening and closing. It is a combination of mechanical innovation and an interactive surface that transforms the umbrella into a device that responds to the user and the environment.
The first Founder Edition is expected to go on sale in 2026.
