The perfect camera? SIGMA BF the most minimalistic camera on the market

In the world of design, we value minimalism and high quality. An example of the combination of these two is the Sigma BF camera, which, made from a single block of aluminium, conceals advanced technology to take high-quality photos every day.

What can a camera company do that stands out, in a world of photography where almost everything has already been invented? Japanese manufacturer Sigma focuses on unique design and craftsmanship. A new camera in the company’s portfolio is the Sigma BF. It is the world’s first camera with a unibody body, cut from a single block of aluminium. You won’t find different joints or materials here. The Japanese have opted for a minimalism that is impressive. Also impressive is the fact that each Sigma BF is created through seven hours of material processing. The result is a device that feels great in the hand and gives a sense of high quality. The camera’s capabilities can be expanded with a wide range of interchangeable lenses for mirrorless cameras not only from Sigma, but also from others such as Panasonic and Leica.

Japanese inspiration

When working on the device, the designers of the Sigma BF camera interpreted haiku, a traditional Japanese form of poetry characterised by its short form, in a technological way. This is exactly what the camera they designed was to be – simple, thoughtful and full of hidden power. The name itself, in turn, refers to the classic Japanese book ‘The Book of Tea’ by Kakuzō Okakura. “BF” stands for “Beautiful Foolishness”, a concept taken directly from this century-old essay on aesthetics, spirituality and everyday culture.

We wanted to create a camera for the everyday – to capture those small, beautiful moments that do not require perfection, but presence. Just like a tea ceremony, BF photography is meant to be a moment of breath and delight , says Kazuto Yamaki, CEO of Sigma Corporation.

The beauty of simplicity

What strengths do we see in this device? The references to simplicity are not limited to the minimalist design. The design philosophy has been subordinated to software and functions, consciously narrowed down to specific options. The Sigma BF is intended to be a camera that can be used every day, during ordinary moments to which we will return with fondness years later. We will not find here the PASM modes known from professional cameras, instead we can use five key image parameters, intuitively controlled from the monitor level. The manufacturer gives us access to change the settings for shutter, aperture, ISO sensitivity, exposure compensation and colour modes. All within thumb reach. All intuitive to use.

The SIGMA BF is available in two colour versions – silver and black. Its front half has delicate milling and the other half is completely smooth. The upper part is decorated with a single button – the shutter button. On the back, there is a sizable screen and just a few buttons, including a circular one to make it easier to change settings. The screen itself displays only the necessary information, without any distractions.

Power under the hood

There is a lot of power in this little baby! Underneath the sleek, streamlined form is a full-frame sensor that impresses with image quality, supported by hybrid autofocus with intelligent face, pet and motion detection. Filmmakers get 6K recording with L-Log profile – a tool that opens the door to free creation and work with an impressive tonal range. And instead of a traditional SD card slot, this camera offers 230 GB of built-in memory, ready to hold thousands of photographs and hours of video footage.

We tested the functionality of the camera in our editorial office. This is because the device has been accompanying us for several weeks during numerous events, visits to museums, art galleries or fashion shows. It is the photos and videos taken with the Sigma BF that we often publish on our IG Stories.
