The historic railway station in Otwock is currently undergoing a metamorphosis. The official start of the works took place on 8 September and from this point on, the facility enters a new phase in its history. The investment will mean that in about a year and a half, travellers will be able to use a renovated and very presentable building, which will become a landmark of the town. In the meantime, a temporary pavilion will take over passenger services.
The Otwock railway station from over a century ago
The railway station in Otwock was built in 1910, according to a project by Jan Fijałkowski, and has been listed in the register of monuments for many years. Modernisation, which began yesterday, aims to restore its original character while equipping the facility with modern amenities. Passengers will gain an accessible space for people with disabilities, families with children and travellers with larger luggage. As part of the work, it is planned to replace window and door frames, renovate the roof, restore the façade and refurbish the interior. The historic shelter on the side of the platforms will also be preserved and refurbished. The installation of electronic information boards, the opening of ticket offices and toilets, and the creation of a service area are planned for the station’s main lobby. Part of the building can be used for cultural activities, including a reading room organised by the city.
New square in front of the station and amenities
The space in front of the station on the Orla Street side will also change. The modernisation includes a car park, kiss-and-ride stands, spaces for taxis and people with disabilities, as well as a covered bicycle shelter. This will be complemented by new greenery planting and landscaping. The city and the railway emphasise that the redevelopment is an important moment in the history of Otwock. The railway station has always been a place symbolically connected with the development of the city and its transformations. The works are being carried out under the watchful eye of the conservationist.
Cost and schedule of renovation of the Otwock railway station
The total cost of the investment is approximately PLN 22 million and is financed from PKP S.A.’s own funds. SKB LDR Sp. z o.o. is responsible for the implementation. The work is scheduled to be completed in early 2027, after technical acceptance and obtaining the relevant permits. Further plans also include the construction of a multi-storey car park on Warszawska Street to further relieve congestion in the city centre. For the duration of the modernisation, travellers will use the pavilion set up on Orla Street.
