The Racibórz railway station has been opened up to travellers. The previously motley edifice has been transformed into a modern block with a vertical garden on the façade. The dark building is now heavily glazed. Passengers can also enjoy the new interior quality.
In total, the station building consists of three connected segments. The old building has undergone a huge metamorphosis, as can be seen in comparison with the pre-construction photo we publish below. The façade has been given a modern and somewhat industrial look. The façade has been fitted with large glass panels, allowing plenty of natural light to enter. A clock and an illuminated inscription with the name of the railway station have been installed at the top of the central section.
An interesting feature is the southern part of the building, where the façade is decorated with a 60 square metre vertical garden. The green wall is intended to improve the microclimate and have a positive effect on biodiversity in the vicinity. The railwaymen planted almost 500 plants in this area. The entire building also received night-time illumination.
The Racibórz station has changed its appearance inside. On the ground floor, there is a waiting room with benches, display cabinets for timetables and electronic boards for train arrivals and departures. On the first floor, a so-called summer waiting room has been designed. This part also functions as a viewing terrace.
It is an open space, covered by a roof with a fanlight in the central part, with greenery and small architecture. It will be accessed from the platform or by lift from the ground floor of the station,” informs PKP S.A..

New functions have been added to the wings of the building. In the northern one, space was created for the municipality on the ground floor and for the railway companies on the first floor. In the southern wing, space was designed at street level for retail and service premises, and on the first floor a cultural zone run by the municipality. A small car park has been created on the south side of the station and the pavements along the building have been renovated. There is also bicycle parking and a bicycle repair station at the station.
The entire facility has gained solutions for people with disabilities. Architectural barriers have been removed and guide lines with attention boxes, Braille signage, lifts and ramps have appeared.
The construction of the new station cost PLN 30 million. It is subsidised from the state budget. The investor is Polskie Koleje Państwowe S.A. (Polish State Railways). The contractor for the works was Texom sp. z o.o. from Kraków, and the design documentation was prepared by GPVT S.C. studio from Poznań.
