The Rainbow Cinema in Warsaw is entering a new era. Modernisation of the facility has begun

The Tęcza Cinema, one of the most famous venues on the cultural map of Warsaw, located at 6 Suzina Street in Żoliborz, is undergoing comprehensive modernisation. Yesterday, a contract for the redevelopment of this legendary building, which is inextricably associated with the history of the district, was officially signed. The modern cinema is to retain its iconic character while becoming a cultural centre that meets the needs of contemporary audiences and artists.

The signing ceremony was attended by important people connected with the city and culture: the Deputy Mayor of Warsaw Aldona Machnowska-Góra, the Director of the Andrzej Wajda Film Culture Centre, Joanna Rożen-Wojciechowska, and Tomasz Jezutek, the owner of Varco, which will be responsible for the realisation of the investment. The meeting was also attended by Renata Kozłowska, mayor of Żoliborz, Artur Jóźwik, director of the Culture Office, Barbara Hruszowiec, president of the “Żoliborz Central” Warsaw Housing Cooperative, and Donata Rapacka, chairwoman of the Żoliborz District Culture Committee.

The redevelopment includes the modernisation of the cinema hall itself, which will be equipped with the latest technology. The plans include the installation of a Dolby Atmos sound system and a widescreen, both of which are intended to provide viewers with a top-quality film experience. Despite the introduction of modern solutions, the Rainbow Cinema will retain the tradition of showing films from projectors on 35mm film, which is a reference to the facility’s past. The building will also be adapted to the needs of people with disabilities, which is in line with the city’s policy on the accessibility of public cultural spaces. The project also includes the implementation of energy-efficient solutions to minimise the cinema’s impact on the environment.

Deputy Mayor Aldona Machnowska-Góra noted in her speech how important this investment is for the local community and Warsaw as a whole. Thanks to the city’s cooperation with the Warsaw Housing Cooperative “Żoliborz Centralny”, which handed over the building for use, the Tęcza cinema will become not only a place for showing films, but also a space for various cultural initiatives. Exhibitions, concerts, workshops and other artistic events are to be held in the building, creating new opportunities for the district’s residents to actively participate in cultural life.

Varco, a company with many prestigious projects to its credit, including the modernisation of the Mazovian Institute of Culture and the new headquarters of the Jerzy Semkow Polish Sinfonia Iuventus Orchestra, is responsible for realising the modernisation. The design documentation was prepared by Andrzej Kaczmarczyk and Sylwia Bartoszewska of the Kaczmarczyk S.C. Architect’s Office.

After completion of the modernisation, the Tęcza cinema is to reopen its doors, offering the inhabitants of Żoliborz and the whole of Warsaw not only film screenings, but also an inspiring space for creators and organisers of various artistic initiatives. This investment is a step towards combining the rich tradition with modernity, which together are to create a place that meets the needs of contemporary audiences.
