In September 2024, Lądek-Zdrój found itself in a very dramatic situation when a violent and destructive flood wave passed through the town. The water did not bypass the oldest part and broke into the historic town hall. The basement and ground floor of the building were flooded and the water level reached more than two metres in some places. Although a year has passed since those events and many of the buildings have already been restored, traces of the tragedy can still be seen. Entrepreneurs have rebuilt their premises, but the renovation of the town hall in Lądek-Zdrój requires much more serious work.
Contract for the renovation of the town hall in Lądek-Zdrój
At the end of September 2025, Mayor Tomasz Nowicki signed a contract for the comprehensive renovation of the town hall, which has served as the seat of the municipal authorities and the Registry Office for many years. The contractor was the local company WASAMA. The cost of the investment is PLN 12 million, entirely financed by government funds for post-flood reconstruction. The renovation will take two years and will be completed in 2027. All work will be carried out under the close supervision of the conservation officer.

Plan of renovation works in Lądek-Zdrój
The works have been divided into three stages. The first, scheduled to be completed by the end of this year, involves work in the basement, the rooms most affected by the flood. Insulation of the foundations, renovation of the stairs, as well as plastering and flooring works will be carried out there. Subsequent phases will include the renewal of the façade, thermo-modernisation, installation of a heat pump and the installation of a lift and facilities for people with disabilities. This will give the town hall a refreshed appearance and make it more functional and future-proof.
Town hall in Lądek-Zdrój – history
The town hall in Lądek-Zdrój is one of the most recognisable buildings in the town. The first building of this type was erected as early as 1537, but it succumbed to fire several times. The present edifice was erected in 1872 as a result of a thorough reconstruction of the previous building and was given an eclectic style, combining elements of classicism and neo-Baroque. The Town Hall has survived in this form to the present day, and has since been entered in the register of historical monuments, which took place in 1983.

The market in Lądek and plans for the future
The centre of Lądek-Zdrój, like the town hall, was severely affected by the flooding. While it is true that within a year of the disaster a significant part of the market square was repaired and the cobblestones were replenished, further measures will be necessary. The authorities have announced a complete reconstruction of this space, which is to include new greenery, water retention and aesthetics. The municipality’s aim is to create a more resident- and tourist-friendly place.
Symbolic renovation of the town hall in Lądek-Zdrój
Lądek residents remember well the first days after the disaster and the enormity of the damage, but the mobilisation of the local community was immediately apparent. Many entrepreneurs and families undertook the clean-up and reconstruction work themselves, without waiting for help. The renovation of the town hall, which is now underway, is therefore a symbolic closure of that difficult period and a step towards a new stage of development for Lądek-Zdrój, where there is still much to be done.
