For some, a table is a place; for others, it’s just a piece of furniture. Yet there’s always plenty going on around a shared table. Get-togethers, work, meals, conversations about sadness and bursts of joy. We often don’t realise just how important this piece of furniture is. That’s why the central theme of the 31st issue of whiteMAD is precisely the shared table.
The Fashion section has become our dressmaking table, as it is usually on its surface that a collection is born. Oliwia Matlak, a fashion design student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Łódź, presents her graduation collection ‘Parallax’, whilst Agnieszka Grosser, designer and founder of the FORMY FORMY brand, shows how creatively she approaches cuts and pays attention to detail. In this section, we also take a look at the work of Agnieszka Bukowska. The fascinators, bow ties, ties, frills and handbags she creates are like little works of art.
In the Architecture section, we’ll find tables featured in Polish homes and flats. Good examples of how to organise the space around a table include the designs of Agata Hann, who designed the interior of a flat in Gdynia; a project by the Kubieniec and Długosz duo; and an atmospheric flat in Warsaw decorated by Karina Roman from Wnętrza P/art. You’ll find a veritable wealth of tables in the article describing Apollca Café. This Kraków café is a place for both body and soul. Do have a look.

You can read about iconic Polish tables in the Design section. Design historian Wiktoria Kijowska describes selected pieces of furniture that adorned the living rooms and dining rooms of Polish homes decades ago. She has juxtaposed them with contemporary designs by Polish designers.
And how do the creators, whom we asked for their views, interpret the idea of a communal table? You’ll find the answer at the end of this issue!
We’d like to thank Dorota Piechocińska (ilustraDORA), who created the illustration shown opposite, as well as H&M and Tomasz Wróbel (71rzeczy) for his creativity and support.
Come and join us at the table!
