The spirit of mid-century and Scandinavian minimalism. New interior in one of Wrocław’s villas

Wrocław’s Zalesie is a charming district where historic buildings hide extraordinary potential that can be brought out and rediscovered through contemporary architectural designs. One such example is a pre-war villa in which one of the flats has been transformed by COI Pracownia Architektury Wnętrz into a harmonious space combining functionalism, mid-century modern style and Scandinavian minimalism. The common denominator of this metamorphosis is 1950s aesthetics, natural materials and a muted colour palette.

Classics in a modern way

Designer Monika Rogusz Witkoś was inspired by the investor’s simple motto: “the style we want to live in is (…) functionalism in the broadest sense.” The COI architect responded to this challenge by creating a space full of elegance, comfort and practical solutions. Wood became the focal point of the arrangement, used on the floors in a classic herringbone pattern, in the form of veneer wall coverings and as an element of the furniture, which give the interior warmth and cohesion. Sophisticated combinations of simple, geometric forms with rounded details – such as arches and oval shapes in the bathroom – introduced subtle references to the retro aesthetic.

Living area – kitchen, dining room and living room

The kitchen, kept in shades of wood and white, combines functionality and minimalist elegance. The kitchen island with an integrated sink flows seamlessly into the dining area, while simple wooden handles, concave fretwork and subtle wall boarding complete the look. In the living room, on the other hand, the light design of the bookcase and the LAS lamp above the table give the space a distinctive mid-century style atmosphere.

Private space – bedroom and bathroom

The bedroom is an example of minimalism in its pure form. Natural materials, white and mirrors harmoniously create a calm space in which a functional wardrobe is hidden. Key furnishings such as the Noti bed and Artemide wall sconces blend perfectly with the interior aesthetic, creating an aura of relaxation.

The bathroom, although small, impresses with its thoughtful design. The floor is decorated with terrazzo, and the oval shower is finished with a subtle mosaic. The wood around the washbasin flows seamlessly into the door, further enhancing the coherence of the design.

Space for relaxation and greenery

The designers have also provided space for relaxation – an alcove by the window finished in wood provides a cosy area for relaxation. The villa’s interiors are enriched by numerous plants that enliven the space and add freshness, creating the impression of a natural connection between the interior and the garden.

The answer to the needs of the modern family

The design of the 100-square-metre flat was created with a family of four in mind, who wanted to combine the classic with a modern lifestyle. The couple, Justyna and Maciej, admit that the decision to buy a flat in a pre-war villa was a bold one, but in retrospect – the best one. They recall with joy their cooperation with COI Interior Design Studio, which perfectly realised their vision, combining classic details, modern functionality and subtle touches of mid-century modern.

“We wanted to create an interior that would soothe us while providing us with space to live and work,” say the owners. Today, almost two years after moving in, they proudly point out that every room in the house suits their needs, and that details – such as the arches in the hallway or the bookcase in the living room – give the interior a unique feel.
