The sundial, which is one of the most striking landmarks of the Staromiejski Park in Łódź, has been renovated. The blue-yellow sculpture that measures time by means of the sun was in need of a major overhaul.
The sundial in the Staromiejski Park was renovated
One of the more popular sundials in Herring Park underwent an overhaul involving the replacement of the granite slabs, in some places the slabs were already peeling away from the structure. The base plates were also cleaned.
The work contractors also replenished the ceramic tiles in the clock sculpture itself. This is another renovation work in Staromiejski Park; as part of the general overhaul, most of the area was renovated and equipped with a variety of infrastructure for the citizens of Łódź (chess stations, a dog run, a boules court and new running and walking paths).
Revitalisation of Staromiejski Park in Łódź
The Old Town Park is one of the most important social spaces of local and supra-local character in this part of the city. The most important design idea is to show and present the past of the place. To this end, a ‘Lost Quarter’ is being designed – on the basis of available maps, historical materials and photographs, it is planned, with the use of vegetation, to show the pre-war layout of the quarter – showing the streets and outlines of buildings.
As part of the revitalisation activities, the dilapidated surfaces of the park alleys will be reconstructed, including the creation of a new viewing axis running from Zachodnia Street to the water reservoir in the eastern part of the park – following the natural bed of the Łódka River. The entrances to the park from Wolborska Street will be reconstructed and adapted for use by people with disabilities. The park will gain a functional connection with the Old Town Square through an illumination system: “Rays of Light”.
In terms of recreation, it is planned to build a new playground with zoning for children of different age groups; to retrofit a dictionary and build a street-work-out gym; to rebuild a fountain, build boules pitches, set up chess and ping-pong tables.
Important for all park users – three new public toilets will be built. The first will be located in the western part, west of Nowomiejska Street near the chess square, the second in the central part, near the playground, gym and roller track and the third east of the axis of East Street, next to the expanded playground.
“We will take care of the greenery. It is planned to refresh the vegetation cover, take stock of the greenery, introduce new plantings including flower beds and flower parterres and recultivate the lawns with the introduction of new plantings of bulbous plants.” – reads the announcement on the municipal website revitalizacja.uml.lodz.pl
There will be new park lighting, benches, bins, bicycle racks, gazebos, and the existing park sculptures will be renovated.
The scope of works includes:
- construction of park paths and renovation of existing paths
- construction of terrain stairs
- construction of gabion walls
- construction of boules pitch
- construction of roller track
- construction of an open-air amphitheatre
- construction of 2 linear floor fountains – symbolic trace of the course of the Łódka riverbed
- a fountain symbolising the chimney of the former Gheling brothers factory
- construction of 3 public toilet systems
- construction of 2 gates – symbolic representation of the historic Elias Karo Passage
- construction of fences not exceeding 2.20 m in height
- construction of 4 free-standing gazebos with an area of up to 35m2
- construction and assembly of small architectural objects
- construction of a playground and installation of play equipment
- construction of an outdoor gym and installation of training equipment
- construction of a dog run and agility equipment
- extension of park lighting along with supply of technical infrastructure – detailed solutions according to technical design
- construction of water and sewage connections – detailed solutions as per the technical design
- construction of automatic watering system for green areas – detailed solutions as per technical design
- planting greenery
It is worth mentioning that the revitalisation of Staromiejski Park is not the only revitalisation ongoing in Łódź. The capital of the Łódź Voivodeship has been investing in revitalisation, modernisation and renovation of urban spaces and buildings for years.
