Ząbkowska 19

The tenement house at 19 Ząbkowska Street will regain its shine. Municipal flats will be built there

Warsaw is continuing its extensive modernisation of historic buildings. The next investment, which will be a thorough refurbishment of two outbuildings standing at 19 Ząbkowska Street, will be launched soon. After reconstruction, the buildings will offer 50 new council flats. The project involves improving the technical standard of the buildings and adapting them to modern needs. The new premises will be equipped with central heating, lifts, and some of them will be adapted for people with disabilities. The courtyard will also be transformed. The cost of the investment will exceed PLN 30 million.

The tenement house is under conservation protection and is listed in the municipal register of monuments, which is why special attention was paid to preserving its historical character during the design work. The contractor will be selected soon. The renovation of 19 Ząbkowska St. is part of a broader urban revitalisation programme, under which tenement houses that have been taken out of use are renovated. So far, 65 buildings in various parts of the capital have been modernised. In total, this amounts to as many as 1,300 units, which after redevelopment will be used as council flats. The cost of the entire project is estimated at around PLN 700 million, with planned financial support from government funds.

The district authorities are announcing further investments. This year, tenders are planned for the renovation of ten tenement houses, including those on Łochowska, Stalowa, Mała, Markowska and Wrzesińska Streets. In parallel, residential projects in other districts are being developed. Throughout Warsaw, as of 2018, more than 14,000 units have been prepared for people waiting for housing support. Approximately 2,500 more council and TBS flats are currently in the preparatory phase. The handover of new premises to tenants is also underway, including 24 flats on Cyrulików Street in Rembertów and 66 flats in Wawer.

As part of the tenement modernisation programme, other dilapidated buildings are also being rebuilt and returned to use after renovation. Between 2018 and 2024 alone, 22 buildings with 352 residential units were comprehensively renovated, with nearly PLN 140 million allocated for this purpose. The abandoned and dilapidated outbuildings of Ząbkowska Street will soon join this group.
