The Teutonic Castle in Świecie is entering another significant stage in its history. Conservation work is currently underway at the medieval stronghold, which is a prelude to a broader revitalisation of the monument’s surroundings and the promontory on which it stands. The local government has prepared a long-term development concept for this area, which was implemented by the APA Wojciechowski Architekci studio with the support of the consulting firm The Making. What exactly will change?
Teutonic Castle in Świecie
The Teutonic stronghold in Świecie was built in the 14th century at the confluence of the Vistula and Wda rivers. The building used to have an almost square layout and four corner towers. Today, its structure is dominated by a leaning main tower. In the Middle Ages, the stronghold served military and administrative functions for the Teutonic Order. In the 17th century, it suffered significantly during the wars with Sweden and gradually fell into ruin over the following years. However, for about 100 years, work has been underway to slowly restore the Teutonic Castle in Świecie to its former form and significance in the town and the landscape of the Vistula valley.

Renovation works on the monument
Construction and cleaning work is currently underway at the castle, and contractors are preparing the site for the new development of the monument. First, some of the undergrowth and remnants of the old infrastructure were removed, which allowed further work to begin on the immediate surroundings of the medieval stronghold. In subsequent stages, new walking routes, cycle paths and a viewing terrace will be added. The plan also includes green plantings, lighting and small architectural features. The Teutonic Castle in Świecie itself is also awaiting major changes. These will include the reconstruction of part of the roof, repair of the ceilings, renovation of the brick walls and installation of new window frames. Archaeologists and conservators are supervising the entire project.
The Teutonic Castle in Świecie reborn
The development of a master plan for the monument and the promontory at the fork in the rivers was preceded by detailed functional studies and an assessment of the adaptability of the historic building. Experts drew attention to the technical limitations resulting from the structure and conservation requirements. For this reason, the development of cultural and tourist activities was spread between the castle and its immediate surroundings. The Natura 2000 protected area, the viewing axes of the Vistula valley, the urban transport system, and the spatial relations with the historic city centre play a significant role in the study. The whole was treated as a coherent, mutually interacting system.

Phased implementation of the urban strategy
According to the authorities in Świecie, the document is of strategic importance and sets the direction for development for many years to come. First and foremost, the local government is focusing on the renovation of the castle and the recreational development of the areas surrounding the stronghold. The next elements of the programme are to be implemented gradually, as funding from various public programmes becomes available. The study guides the activities within the investment and sets the framework for the cultural and educational offer prepared by the Cultural Centre in Świecie. In this vision, the Teutonic castle ceases to be merely a historical monument and becomes an important centre of social and tourist activity in the town.
The development concept and its authors
