In one of the 1970s blocks of flats in Mokotów, an apartment was created that shows how much can be achieved through thoughtful reorganisation of space. Over 50 square metres required complete renovation — from damaged partition walls to an outdated functional layout. For Karolina Jackowska from the ONUKO studio, this became the starting point for creating a completely redesigned interior.
Flats in old blocks of flats have considerable potential. The greatest possibilities are offered by removing partition walls, changing the function of rooms and combining them. This was the case with a flat in a block of flats in Mokotów, Warsaw.
The designer proposed a layout that opens the kitchen to the living room, eliminates one of the two bathrooms and enlarges the other so that it can accommodate both a bathtub and a shower. In the private area, a comfortable bedroom with spacious built-in furniture and a small study were created, allowing for comfortable work at home.
The owners wanted a peaceful flat based on natural materials and wood. Knowing their preferences, the designer also introduced a recurring blue accent – present in the built-in furniture and details, adding character to the interior without being overly dominant. The second distinctive motif is the arches in the entrance area, which appear on several planes: in the form of wardrobe fronts, in the floor pattern and on the wall visible from the doorway. This solution organises the space and gives it an individual tone.

The biggest challenge was to reconcile the needs of future residents with the limited space. The standard kitchen island was abandoned in the living room, even though cooking is a daily and enjoyable activity here. Instead, a custom-made table was created, which serves a dual function: when pushed up against the kitchen cabinets, it becomes an additional worktop, and when moved away, it turns into a comfortable meeting place. This is an element that the designer is particularly pleased with, as she is with the harmonious combination of white, wood and blue fittings.
After the makeover, the owners gained a refined, functional and coherent interior. In a 1970s block of flats, they managed to create a contemporary, comfortable flat tailored to the lifestyle of its residents, showing that even a small space can become a fully-fledged, comfortable home.
