The University of Gdansk is embarking on a new investment at its Oliwa campus – a modern sports centre. This investment, the first stage of which is a multifunctional sports hall, is expected to be ready by the end of 2026. on 10 June, the rector of the University of Gdansk, Prof. Piotr Stepnowski, signed an agreement with a representative of Budimex, which will carry out the project.
The new Sports Centre of the University of Gdańsk will be built at Wita Stwosza Street, just behind the former rector’s office. The facility will serve not only the students and staff of the university, but also the residents of Gdańsk. The Rector of the UG, Prof. Piotr Stepnowski, emphasises the importance of this investment: “Not only will it equip our campus with a modern sports centre, but it will also open us up to the possibility of hosting the Polish Academic Championships.”

The largest hall in the new facility will be 1,600sq m with an auditorium for 270 people. It will be equipped with a top-class sports floor and full-size basketball, volleyball and futsal courts. In addition, there will be four smaller sports halls, each measuring approximately 150sq m. All materials and equipment will be certified to enable world-class sports competitions. The construction of the sports hall, which will cost more than PLN 61 million, will be carried out under the ‘design and build’ formula. The Ministry of Sport will cover up to 50 per cent of the net cost of implementation, with the remainder to be financed by Treasury bonds.

The University of Gdansk Sports Centre will be built in stages. Once the sports hall has been completed, the university plans to build further facilities, including:
– a full-size football pitch with an artificial surface and sanitary facilities,
– a tennis hall,
– outdoor basketball and beach sports pitches,
– sports and training hall,
– 25-metre swimming pool.

Tomasz Aftański, deputy director of the Centre for Physical Education and Sport at UG, emphasises that the modern sports facilities will not only serve the university’s students and staff, but also the local community.
“We are open to cooperation with Polish sports associations, which is why we received funding from the Ministry of Sport for the construction of the hall,” – says Aftanski.
The construction of the Sports Centre at the University of Gdansk is a long-awaited investment that will significantly raise sports and recreational standards at the university. Thanks to modern sports facilities, the university will gain new opportunities to organise sports competitions and promote physical activity among students and residents of Gdańsk.
