Greetings from Jerozolimskie Avenue, the famous palm tree on the General Charles de Gaulle roundabout in Warsaw, was unveiled on 12 December 2002. The installation was created by Joanna Rajkowska. The work will soon change hands and regain its former glory.
Poland’s most famous palm tree has decorated Warsaw for 22 years. Today, the installation is one of the most popular among residents. The sculpture will soon be included in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art and will be refurbished on this occasion.
Unveiled in 2002, the installation requires renovation work. The work is expected to be completed with the opening of the new Museum of Modern Art building, which is located in the centre of Warsaw. As part of the work, the leaves and ‘bark’ elements will be replaced. The steel structure will undergo conservation. The funds for the restoration work come from the budget of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage and will be used within the framework of the programme of the Centre for Polish Sculpture in Orońsko ‘Sculpture in Public Space for the Independent – 2024’.
The author of the sculpture, Joanna Rajkowska, had planned to place more palms in Warsaw, but finally decided to place one. It was made by the American company Soul-utions.com from plastic and natural materials. It is about 15 metres high and waterproof, and its stability is ensured by being set on a metal structure weighted down with prefabricated concrete elements.
In February this year we reported that the palm tree is likely to disappear from the roundabout. The reason for this is the planned reconstruction of the cross-city line and a new railway stop there. For the time being, we do not know specific dates for the start of the works. You can find our article on this subject HERE.
