The winners of the Bang & Olufsen competition “Sound in Architecture. Architecture in sound”

Bang & Olufsen, an icon of innovative design and superior audio technology, is proud to present the results of the first edition of the nationwide competition “Sound in Architecture. Architecture in sound’. The jury selected the winning entries from among several hundred submissions. In the presented visions of living room arrangement, Bang & Olufsen products are not just an elegant addition – they are an integral part of a sophisticated space.

The competition ‘Sound in Architecture. Architecture in sound” was aimed by the brand at architects, interior designers, students
and design enthusiasts. Participants were tasked with creating a concept for a modern living room in which Bang & Olufsen products would be an integral part of the arrangement. The aim was to explore new ways of combining sound with architecture, creating interiors that offer both an aesthetic and acoustic experience. The submitted projects, which fulfilled the requirements of the regulations, were assessed by a jury consisting of Tiina Karjalainen-Kierysch – Head of Design at Bang & Olufsen (chairperson of the jury), Katarzyna Będzińska – influencer, creator of the Minimaliving profile, Marcin Szczelina – architecture critic, editor of Archisnob magazine, and Adam Pulwicki – architect, member of SAW.

The competition provided us with a lot of excitement! The submitted projects were of a very high standard, and it took a lot of effort for the jury to award points to such diverse and refined interiors – Tiina Karjalainen Kierysch, Head of Design at Bang & Olufsen, commented on the selection process.

The grand prize for the entry entitled ‘Cliff House’ was won by Joanna Dolot of Miso Miso Studio, presenting a minimalist interior dominated by natural raw materials and earthy colours. The jury appreciated the concept not only for the elements indicated in the design, but also drew attention to the excellent adaptation of the interior to the needs of the users of the brand’s products and the creative solutions that build an atmosphere of peace and harmony, reflecting the brand identity of Bang & Olufsen.

Joanna Dolot’s concept is that of an interior that is calm and subdued, but at the same time spectacular. It catches the eye with its well-considered and coherent thinking about the space, the combination of materials and conscious planning. Bang & Olufsen products, which are impressively displayed, play a central role here, complemented by nature and the phenomenal view outside the window. The interior has harmony, tranquillity and provides an opportunity to savour time filled with sound and images. Bang& Olufsen’s timeless design fits perfectly into this space. The fast-paced and overstimulated world needs such interiors,” emphasised Adam Pulwicki, founder of the PULVA studio.

The main prize is an iconic Bang & Olufsen Beosound A9 loudspeaker, an exclusive trip to the brand’s headquarters in Struer (Denmark), a professional photo shoot of the project and promotion in the national media.

First place in the Bang & Olufsen competition work by Joanna Dolot, MISO MISO Studio

First place honours went to Agnieszka Słopecka of RAW Design studio for her work ‘Cosy Minimalism’, in which the author combines various aesthetic philosophies, describing them as drawing on Japanese wabi-sabi and a timeless, classic style. As she herself mentions, this creates a warm and harmonious atmosphere that soothes the senses and promotes relaxation. These design features did not escape the jury members, however, who also paid attention to the consistency of the interior with the Bang & Olufsen brand image and the skilful use of the products in the arrangement of a smaller space.

The award-winning proposal is characterised not only by attention to detail, but also by the thoughtful combination of Bang & Olufsen technology and the high aesthetics of the space. This proves that even in a small interior, it is possible to create conditions conducive to an exceptional aesthetic and audio experience,” noted Katarzyna Będzińska, a jury member and one of Poland’s leading interior design influencers.

As part of the award, the winner of the competition will receive a Bang & Olufsen Beosound 2 loudspeaker, a trip to the brand’s headquarters and promotion of the project in the media.

The second award went to Piotr Łucyan from the Art’Up Interiors studio for his work ‘Red Velvet’. The interior design features plaster stucco, alluding to the atmosphere of Paris, an oak floor laid in a classic French herringbone pattern and additionally decorated with a border, reflecting the stucco pattern on the ceiling. There were also icons of contemporary design in the form of furniture, lighting as well as Bang & Olufsen products. All of this was accompanied by intense claret, a colour that appeared both on the walls and in other design elements. The jury praised the concept above all for its extravagance, boldness and consistency in creating a space that, “like Bang & Olufsen products, is not for everyone”.

Courage and a conscious approach to design are what set this project apart. Like Bang & Olufsen’s products, Piotr Łucyan’s proposal impresses with its uniqueness and determination in creating space,” notes Marcin Szczelina, jury member, art critic and editor-in-chief of Architecture Snob magazine.

The second accolade comes with a prize in the form of a Bang & Olufsen Beosound Stage designer soundbar, a trip to the brand’s headquarters in Denmark and a media presentation of the project.

Creativity elevated to a high level

The organisers emphasise the quality and professional manner in which the concepts submitted were developed, reflecting the great interest in innovative solutions combining architecture and sound. Participants in the competition had the opportunity to present their visions almost without formal restrictions, allowing them to fully develop their artistic sensitivity and ingenuity.
