The house is located close to the forest in the heart of the Sutton Mountains in Canada. The investors bought an old house from the 1970s, and instead of demolishing it, they decided to rebuild it to suit modern needs. However, they kept as many of the old elements as possible, resulting in a unique atmosphere inside. The project for the changes was carried out by architects from the La Nony FAMILI studio.
The building has three levels. The change project aimed to create a comfortable and functional interior for the whole family. The house was to become an ideal place to spend leisure time, hence the decision to create large window openings. With a cup of tea, one can enjoy the nearby landscape and take a breather.
Characteristic elements of the house are the ashlar staircase, the impressive stone fireplace and the exposed ceiling beams. These fragments have been preserved and highlighted. For the architects, they were the starting point for the design of the rooms. The architects relied on decorative steel elements and graphic motifs to influence the character of the space. Natural and warm materials such as whitewashed ash and painted panels were used in the design.
Our aim is to design a space where every element finds its place, where there is a balance between emptiness and fullness, carefully placed windows and natural flow. Our strategy often involves creating dense storage areas to clear other spaces,” explains Aza Lussier, Associate Designer at La Nony FAMILI.

After the conversion, the former basement became a bright space at garden level, which now houses the main entrance and a large family room. On the ground floor, the former balcony has been transformed into an extension of the living room, with a large panoramic window overlooking the forest. The residents often spend their evenings here watching films. This is because the television has been hidden on the rail.
The private area has been designed upstairs. The children’s bedrooms are located there. A renovated staircase leads up there, with a handrail in bottle green. The project also emphasises energy efficiency. The insulation has been completely renewed and triple-glazed windows have been installed to ensure optimum thermal comfort.
On the exterior, the variation of cladding materials emphasises the distinctive rhythm of the architecture, while the choice of black and white shades evokes the winter atmosphere of the region.
