They create ceramic wonders. A look inside the ATO Pracownia Plastyczna studio

Its interior was designed by architects from NOWW Studio. The studio of the ATO Pracownia Plastyczna team is located in Kraków. It is also the showroom where the Pracownia shows its best work.

Wojtek Nowak and Paulina Zwolak-Nowak of NOWW Studio are responsible for the interior design. The interior design was created with the idea of combining Japanese minimalist aesthetics with the functionality of a showroom. To achieve this effect, the architects decided that the entire interior of the studio would be covered with clay plaster, creating a neutral but expressive background for the products on display.

It all started with ATO Pracownia Plastyczna, which has been operating for five years in the Old Debniki district of Krakow. At the very beginning, this is where ATO ceramics were created, but all this time I have been dreaming of a meeting place, for all those who love ceramics and beautiful things. From this need an idea was born, which last year came to fruition. ATOStudio Dębniki was created – a showroom, atelier and workshop place at 19 Madalińskiego Street, in Kraków – says Paulina Górniak, owner of ATO>.

The tension between the austerity of the surroundings and the precisely made, intriguingly glazed ceramic artefacts…. It all shows how different but at the same time how coherent nature can be. Similarly, the plaster and the pots and pans are essentially very close to each other.

Light shades of beige dominate the studio, matching the style of the ATO ceramics. The rough walls are juxtaposed with the warmth of natural oak, which appears in the long dresser below the monolithic shelves. The counter, which is the heart of the premises, was also made from oak. The furniture was created using the Adze technique, taken from Japanese woodcarving. A pleated HAY Matin lamp – an object of affection for design fans – was placed on the countertop.

The interior of the showroom also includes a meeting corner, where visitors can enjoy a cup of tea surrounded by beautiful ceramics. This corner is characterised by a coffee table made of brushed steel and a large, round rice-shaped lamp that fills the showroom space like the sun.

Perversely, the Japanese atmosphere is juxtaposed with a classic of Danish carpentry thought, the Asserbo chairs designed by Borge Mogensen, thus showing how much common ground there is between these worlds. ATO’s interior is simple and sparing in detail, while the materials used create a sense of serenity and tranquillity.

About the studio:

NOWW Studio was founded by M.Sc. arch. Wojtek Nowak, a graduate of the Faculty of Architecture at the Cracow University of Technology and a scholarship holder at the Münster University of Applied Sciences. Wojtek was also educated at the Art and Antiques Market. Since 2013, he has been a member of the Malopolska Chamber of Architecture. He gained experience in prominent design offices, working on interesting and diverse buildings, taking part in the full investment process. He created the Fika Kraków café and the Body Espresso Bar, so he learned the design of gastronomic spaces from the “backstage”. In designing NOWW, he looks for eclectic juxtapositions of modernity with elements referring to the stylistics of 20th century styles such as Art Deco, Bauhaus and Modernism. In materials, he values honesty and truthfulness. He looks for inspiration in nature and in other areas of art and culture. The search for unique materials, their juxtapositions and unusual furniture and interior design elements is the daily routine of the office and an ongoing passion. NOWW is also created by Dr. interior architect Paulina Zwolak-Nowak. Paulina graduated from the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow. She specialises in the design of private interiors and exhibition spaces. She is fascinated by the psychological and sensual dialogue between architecture and man. Currently also works for the National Museum in Krakow. An animal lover.
