Work has been completed to restore the railway station in Pionki to its former glory. Architectural details have been preserved in the historic building, and an old cooker is a unique feature of the interior.
The railway station in Pionki was built in 1925 on the route which runs to Radom and Dęblin. The reconstruction was carried out with the help of EU funds from the Operational Programme Infrastructure and Environment. Because the building was entered in the register of historical monuments, the work took place under the supervision of a conservator.
The pre-war building is an example of the so-called Manor Style in railway station architecture. During the works, the façade was renovated, giving it its former appearance and colours. Once yellow, it is now once again pearl white. The new windows resemble the old ones and have been painted green. The original architectural details, such as the roof attics, have also been restored here. The external staircase has also been repaired.
The detail on the top of the facade on the city side is interesting. The symbol of the 1920s PKP appeared there, and on the side of the platforms the emblem of the Second Republic and the date of the station’s construction were placed on the top. It is also worth mentioning that in the 1920s the station was still called Zagożdżon, and only gained its current name Pionki in 1932.
Passengers gained a new quality inside. A spacious lobby was created, where you can wait for trains. There is a lot to see here. The railwaymen have kept the historical elements – the cream-coloured floor with red inserts, the columns, the wooden panelling on the walls and the wooden vestibules. The heart of the station is the historic tiled cooker, which has undergone restoration. The lobby of the reconstructed station is fully heated and air-conditioned and is equipped with, among other things, benches, electronic train arrival and departure boards and a touchscreen map of the station. There are also toilets and a small commercial unit on the ground floor, while the first floor of the building houses a space rented by the local authority with a wedding hall including facilities.
The surroundings of the Pionki railway station have also undergone a metamorphosis. A bicycle shelter was built near the building on the side of the platforms. New benches, baskets and lighting were also installed in the vicinity of the station, and new pavements were laid.
At the same time, the railwaymen commissioned another station – Pionki Zachodnie. In this case, the facility has a more modern character.
The reconstruction of the Pionki and Pionki Zachodnie stations cost PLN 11.2 million gross and PLN 4.5 million gross respectively. The investor is Polskie Koleje Państwowe S.A. (Polish State Railways). The design documentation for the modernisation of the Pionki railway station was prepared by An Archi Group Sp. z o.o. studio, and the contractor for the construction work was Korporacja Budowlana “DARCO” Dariusz Żak. The project for the redevelopment of the Pionki Zachodnie railway station was made by SAFEGE S.A.S. – S.A., and the construction work was carried out by a consortium of companies – TWD-BUD Toczyłowski Sp. k. and WIMAKS HIŃCZA Sp. k.
