The owners dreamt of a location that would offer them peace and quiet and give them the opportunity to relax among nature. They built a house on a tiny island in Canada, mindful of the transport restrictions. However, dependence on water transport is not an obstacle for them.
The house is located in the municipality of Pointe Au Baril in the province of Ontario, Canada, about 200 km north of Toronto. It is a picturesque region of the country, consisting of numerous archipelagos of Precambrian rocks that are scattered along the coast of Georgian Bay.
A complex of buildings has actually been built on the tiny island. They were designed by Akb Architects. A total of four buildings with pitched roofs covered with cedar shingles were created. The colour of the roofs and facades makes the houses almost invisible in good weather – they blend in with the brown-grey rocks surrounding the buildings. The complex consists of the main house building, a sauna, a boat storage area and a fitness room. Communication between the different parts is provided by wooden gangways.
The house consists of an open kitchen, a large dining room and a living room. There is a fireplace in the central area, which has been decorated with local granite slabs. The walls, on the other hand, are made of cedar planks. The same material has been used in the other buildings, adding warmth to the spaces. The main house has two bedrooms, a bathroom and a laundry room.
The unusual location meant that the buildings had to gain strong thermal insulation. The triple-glazed windows and their deep seating means that the interior keeps cooler in summer and warmer in winter. On hot days, it is enough to open the large windows to quickly ventilate the interior. Warmth in winter is provided by wood-burning fireplaces. Water consumption has also been kept to a minimum. Instead of the standard bath, the residents prefer to take a bath in the bay. Of course, if the temperature allows it.
