At the end of last year, the renovation of the facade of the building at 4 Boya-Żeleńskiego Street on the side of Mieczysław Fogg’s square was completed. This was a continuation of work begun in 2022. At that time, half of this façade and the northern gable elevation were renovated with the help of a city grant. A total of PLN 570,000 was allocated by the city for this renovation.
The complex of three modern residential buildings of the Municipal Credit Society was designed by the prominent architect Bohdan Pniewski, about whom we wrote HERE. The block at 4 Boya-Żeleńskiego Street is part of it. In its layout, the urban complex was inspired by Renaissance town squares in Italian cities and is a valuable example in Warsaw of a functionalist architectural premise for residential use.

By 1939, the reinforced concrete skeletal structure of the buildings was completed around the semi-open green courtyard, now Mieczysław Fogg’s square. The outbreak of war interrupted the work, which was resumed after 1945 and finally completed in 1949. After the war, the façades were finished with sandstone cladding with decorative strips of black quartzite and stucco with aggregates and mica. An arcade-like arcade in the ground floor gives the buildings a lightness despite their considerable size. Wide terraces run along the top floor.
Renovation work on the building at number 4 is at the halfway point. The most representative western elevation, facing Mieczysław Fogg’s square, was completed in 2023. First of all, dirt was removed from the stone facing and loose sandstone slabs were fixed by studding. New plaster was also laid. It is now possible to admire the sophisticated geometric architectural detailing, previously hidden under a layer of patina.
The housing association plans to carry out conservation work on all facades of this huge building. Due to the very high cost of the works, the work has been divided into phases. The city’s grant for the completed phase amounted to PLN 261,000.
