This is the essence of Italy. The boutique hotel Convento Francescano

On Italy’s famous Amalfitan Coast, there is a corner that is only just winning the hearts of seekers of authentic experiences. The Cilento region dazzles with its wildlife, crystalline waters and tranquillity unbroken by the wave of mass tourism. It is here, in the small village of Cuccaro Vetere, in the heart of the Cilento National Park, that the Convento Francescano is located – a place that combines history, art and contemporary comfort in a unique composition.

The former Franciscan monastery has been waiting for a second life for decades. Its stone walls had already protected the interior from the turbulent events of the world since the 14th century, becoming a place of tranquillity. When Maria Chiara and Alberto – a couple who longed to return to their hometown after years in bustling Milan – were determined to restore this unique place to the world. Their passion and respect for the local heritage has allowed them to preserve the authentic soul of the monastery while giving it a modern, boutique feel.

Harmony of the sacred and craftsmanship

Convento Francescano has eight rooms, each telling its own story. One is distinguished by walls completely covered with authentic frescoes that transport guests back to medieval times. Another is decorated with paintings made between the 14th and 18th centuries, layered as if time had stopped for a moment. Here, the austere stone walls are the backdrop for the deep Pompeian red of the plasterwork and the natural ceiling beams.

The character of the interiors is also built up by details – well thought out and set in the context of the place. The wall lamps hanging by the beds are made from traditional panari baskets, once used by the inhabitants of Cilento to harvest figs and olives. Today, in their new function, they take on a symbolic dimension – they are not only a source of light, but also a story about local crafts and the daily life of past generations.

Each room also has a free-standing bathtub – spacious, comfortable for two people, with an elegant, minimalist form. These add a subtle contemporary touch to the interiors.

The heart of the courtyard

The central courtyard, surrounded by cloisters, is where the old community spirit comes alive. Here, regional specialities prepared with produce straight from the neighbours are served, and conversations at long tables continue into the late hours. In one corner stands a sculpture of a family on a donkey – the symbol of Cuccaro Vetere, perfectly in keeping with the atmosphere of the place.

Behind the monastery stretches a secluded garden with olive trees and fragments of ancient columns. The focal point is a stone pool that seems as old as the monastery itself. The surface of the water offers a view of the picturesque buildings of Cuccaro Vetere, and the silence is cut only by the sound of the wind and birdsong.

Convento Francescano is more than a hotel. It is a journey back in time, a century-old story inscribed in every detail. Here, sacred architecture meets Italian simplicity and hospitality, creating a space that soothes the senses.
