One of the most beautiful schools in the world is located in Sydney. Its design was prepared by architects from fjcstudio, who won the World Architecture Festival (WAF) award in the Building of the Year category. The school was selected from 42 winning projects from other categories and more than 200 entries from around the world.
Darlington Public School is located in Sydney’s inner city, its origins linked to the history of the continent’s indigenous people. The school is an example of an innovative facility that emphasises the inclusion of its users. The process is aided by designed learning centres that foster collaboration and inclusion. These spaces provide comfort for learning and working both in groups and independently. The architects were keen to ensure that pupils benefit from natural light as much as possible, so they used special skylights in the design. A feeling of closeness to nature was achieved through wood elements that resemble the trees that grow in the region.
The architects treated the building as one big classroom. In many places, there are QR codes to expand the knowledge of the region’s history and nature. Outdoor learning terraces and playgrounds promote openness and connection to nature, reflecting a traditional learning environment.
The building uses environmentally friendly solutions such as rainwater harvesting, natural ventilation and energy conservation. The latter is helped by roofs sloping at the right angle, allowing sunlight to better penetrate inside. This treatment can be seen in the photo above and in the photo gallery.
The fjcstudio studio first won a WAF award in 2013, when the design of the Toi o Tāmaki Art Gallery in Auckland was recognised.
