This is what the Stegny Centre in Warsaw will look like. Competition results

Warsaw has settled a competition for the architectural vision of an ice arena complex in Stegny, including a modern, covered speed skating track and two full-size arenas for ice hockey, figure skating and short-track. In the first phase, the Stegny Centre will gain a track and two main arenas, with seating for 4,500 spectators in the main arena and for 1,500 spectators in the hockey and figure skating arena. The competition for the architectural concept for the modernisation of the Stegny Centre was won by a design by the P2PA studio from Wrocław, together with Metropolis from Szczecin.

The project by P2PA and Metropolis combines technical rationality with poetic form. The jury appreciated the functional clarity of the division of the mass into a massive plinth, an open esplanade zone and a light, horizontal upper part, which defines the hierarchy of spaces and purposes. This clear structure supports the logic of use while creating an internationally recognisable architectural mark. To fans of modernism, the designed building may bring to mind a majestic pavilion.

The competition was a one-stage competition and 13 entries were received. The jury awarded three main prizes: the first one (PLN 200,000) to the team of P2PA Sp. z o.o. from Wrocław and Metropolis Sp. z o.o. from Szczecin, the second one (PLN 150,000) to WXCA Group and JSK Architekci, the third one (PLN 100,000) to Kuryłowicz & Associates. In addition, one first degree distinction (PLN 20 thousand) and two second degree distinctions of PLN 15 thousand each were awarded.

This is a great day for Polish skaters and fans of skating disciplines. We have resolved the competition for the architectural concept for the ice arena complex in Stegny. Already in the first stage of the investment, Warsaw will gain a modern and roofed speed skating track and two full-size ice rinks for ice hockey, figure skating and short-track, ” says Rafał Trzaskowski, Mayor of the Capital City of Warsaw.

The modernisation concept takes into account the Warsaw Green Building Standard: rainwater retention, replanting of existing trees and photovoltaic panels on the roofs. The designers have taken care to provide independent public areas – a café, a gym or recreational elements around the buildings – so that the facility can also serve the residents outside the sporting events calendar.

The award-winning design is distinguished by its good integration into the urban environment. The receding inner curve of the façade creates a small square, accentuating the main compositional axis. A wide staircase emerges from the plane of the crown of the grandstand, wrapping the building at several points and giving it a dynamic character. In the northern part of the plot, a recreational square has formed naturally, directly connected to the outdoor roller skating track and the roller hockey pitch. In keeping with the functional design, a second ice arena was located to the west, allowing them to be linked by an open central bar serving both arenas. The training hall, adjacent to the south-west, completes the compact composition of the development.

The jury appreciated the well-thought-out phasing of the investment, which guarantees the full functionality of the facility already after the first phase has been completed. Each subsequent phase will increase its usability without interfering with the existing solutions. The location of the service facilities in relation to the two halls was also highly rated, which is conducive to the efficient organisation of events.

In the opinion of the jury, the winning concept gives Warsaw a chance to create a modern, recognisable sports facility that will enrich the architectural landscape of the city and become a friendly place for the local community.

The standard of the competition entries was very high. As judges, we had the difficult task of choosing the best one. The many hours of jury discussions were very substantive and fruitful. I am glad that we managed to select such good work and I am looking forward to the implementation of the first stage,” reports Renata Kaznowska, deputy mayor of Warsaw.

The winner of the competition will be invited to negotiate on a sole-source basis. Already in the first stage, a modern speed skating track and two ice halls are to be built. Subsequent stages will include the construction of a third, training hall with a curling track and the development of outdoor spaces: a roller skating track and a roller hockey pitch.
