Tkalnia in Poznań. Industrial building designed by a student

The author of the project is Paweł Konopczyński. The Tkalnia project is a semester project prepared under the supervision of dr inż. arch. Piotr Zierke and was created at the Faculty of Architecture, Poznan University of Technology. Tkalnia is an industrial building that could be built in an industrial part of Poznań.

The Tkalnia project is a conceptual industrial building located in Poznan’s Franowo district, developed as part of the architectural studies. The authors of the project draw on the idea of sustainable architecture, in which a simple, functional form combines innovative technological solutions with concern for the environment.

The facades in the project are made of recycled bricks inspired by local historical fortifications. This approach gives the massing a raw, authentic character while shortening the supply chain and reducing the carbon footprint, which fits in with the tenets of localism and the circular economy.

The environment proposed in the Tkalni concept references the biodiversity of the surrounding meadows and groves, creating a comfortable environment for people and local fauna. Green roofs act as natural thermal insulation, improve the microclimate and provide shelter for birds and insects, while permeable paving and a rainwater retention system allow rainwater to be reused in technological processes and for irrigation of the greenery.

The project’s interiors are based on principles of ergonomics and universal design to suit the diverse needs of users. Large glazing, skylights and intelligent irises are intended to guarantee optimum access to natural light, reducing the need for artificial lighting and increasing the energy efficiency of the building. The Tkalni concept demonstrates how technology, user comfort and respect for nature can be combined in the future to create a space full of harmony and inspiration.

The “Tkalnia” project recently won first place in the 45th edition of the competition named after architects Janina and Władysław Czarnecki, organised by the SARP Poznań Branch. What did the jury members like about it? We publish the justification below:

The work entitled. “Tkalnia”, by Paweł Konopczyński, is a mature and well-thought-out proposal for a sustainable industrial building, consciously embedded in the local spatial context. The location in Franowo, Poznań, was treated with great sensitivity – the simplified, horizontal form of the building blends harmoniously into the surrounding greenery, and the use of demolition bricks with an uneven texture is a clear reference to the historic military buildings of Fort Ia.

From a functional point of view, the design correctly solves the layout of the production process, with its great asset being the extensive consideration of the needs of employees. The designer has taken care of both the ergonomic aspects – adequate daylight at the workstations and their rational organisation – and the psycho-physical comfort of the users, introducing abundant green elements and pro-ecological solutions.

Noteworthy is the proposal of two large, green inner courtyards and the use of extensive green roofs. These measures have a positive impact on the building’s microclimate and aesthetics, promote biodiversity, and enable rainwater retention and re-use.

The work is distinguished not only by its substantive quality and the high graphic culture of its presentation, but also by its ideological maturity. “Tkalnia” by Paweł Konopczyński aptly responds to the contemporary challenges of designing industrial spaces, combining technological processes with respect for the natural environment, the context of the place and human needs.
