TONN modular furniture system. Original design by a student

The author of the project is Joanna Stankiewicz. She created the modular TONN furniture system as part of her bachelor’s thesis, which she defended in 2024. The design of the system makes it possible to change the appearance of a piece of furniture and adjust its functionality to suit her needs.

The project was created using advanced 3D modelling based on conceptual sketches, and its design draws inspiration from the bold shapes of the Memphis Group and the futuristic aesthetic of the 1960s and 1970s. TONN is an extremely versatile modular storage system, created for people who value flexibility and precise control over their interior design. Thanks to an innovative system of combining elements, the bookcase can be easily configured and customised – from the simplest of layouts to more creative compositions.

The concept is to create the individual elements from recycled plastic. TONN gives new life to materials that would otherwise be discarded, restoring their value and functionality. The design also allows for the use of additional materials, such as bent plywood or aluminium, extending the system’s range of personalisation possibilities.

The whole is based on eight modules, which can be freely arranged both horizontally and vertically. For systems with additional functions – for example, a changing table, a children’s desk or a desk system for offices – modules are available that ensure visual coherence and compatibility with the basic elements, but with modified dimensions, precisely tailored to the specific application.

The most distinctive element is the double-sided corrugated walls, which allow the installation of shelves with drawers in two size variants, depending on the type and size of the stored items. Assuming that the modules can be purchased separately, the system allows different colour variations to be combined, giving artistic freedom to create a personalised solution. The entire system is easy to assemble and disassemble, and stability is ensured by screws with a sleeve, connecting the convex part of the wall with the shelf, so that the furniture does not wobble.
