Townhouse-like atmosphere. Beautiful flat in a new building in Krakow

This is a project by the One Desk studio. The flat is 50 square metres and is located in a new building in Krakow. Its owner knew well what kind of space he wanted to live in. He presented his collected inspirations to the architects, who faced the difficult task of meeting his expectations in a limited space. They succeeded.

The flat’s windows overlook the Polish Aviators’ Park and the Arena. The flat was designed with one person in mind, who works from home full-time. Therefore, the architects converted one of the bedrooms into a home office.

‘We advised the client, who was still hesitant to change the flat for a larger one, to stay with the original purchase, knowing that this space could be ‘won’ functionally and visually without having to invest a lot of money in another 20 sq m,’ admit the architects.

As a result, a study was designed in the central area between the bedroom, dining room and living room, which is the keystone of the whole. The work room is separated by a wooden and glass wall equipped with double doors. When extended, they open onto the living area, giving the whole a sense of space and depth.

Another important design element was a fully functional kitchen. The owner likes to cook not only for himself, but also for his friends, so a large dining table was placed next to the kitchen area. The visual lightness of the kitchen area was taken care of by placing some of the storage space (including the fridge) in a large green box. As a result, a display cabinet with a more decorative character appeared above the kitchen worktop instead of the classic kitchen cabinets.

Visitors to the flat spend a lot of time at the aforementioned table. Therefore, the choice of chairs was important. They had to be not only pretty, but above all comfortable. The choice fell on chairs by Zuiver, whose form is an interpretation of classic, modernist models.

The flat in Krakow is visually warm. There is a lot of oak wood here in a natural honey colouring. Oak is used in a variety of ways: as a veneer colour for the lower kitchen cabinets or bathroom cabinets, as a finishing material for the door frames and as a material for the parquet flooring. The whole is complemented by accents – the green of the kitchen cabinets, the brick-red of the RTV cabinets and the blue of the bathroom cabinets.

Importantly, the RTV cabinet was designed specifically for this interior. The bathroom and bedroom doors are also not the usual items from the shop. The joinery frame was made from solid oak wood to the full height of the room, while the door panel was finished with a lacquer in a grey-beige shade. Above the door, a fanlight was designed to let natural light into the entrance hall.
